The Tyler Perry-style betrayal wasn't coming from the Board. It was coming from the Spire itself. The floor beneath us began to hum. I felt the mercury in my own blood begin to vibrate, pulling me toward the center of the table. The Board wasn't just talking; they were using the table as a Siphon. "Dante, get back!" But it was too late. The obsidian table flared with a brilliant gold light, and a cage of pure energy snapped into place around us.

We both knelt on the floor, pressing our eyes to the small openings to see what was happening on the other side. My mouth dropped open the moment I saw the next room. It was a small, dark space lit only by flickering flames. Three people sat around a heavy wooden table. In the center of the table sat a giant crystal ball. It was not clear. A strange, grey mist swirled inside the glass like a trapped storm.

My aunt and uncle dragged my parents aside. “Shut up! One more word and you’re out of my house!” Since this was the final round, the room fell into a suffocating silence, quiet enough that a pin drop would echo. At the same time, Taylor and I picked up our dice cups, and the crisp clatter of dice bouncing inside filled the room. She stared at me dead in the eye. Neither of us wanted to put our cup down first. My arm was starting to go numb from shaking. I couldn’t be bothered to drag it out anymore and shouted, “Open!”

And it wasn’t over. I pivoted toward one of the round tables near the rear of the room, a low-hanging centerpiece half upended over the tablecloth. Candlelight from the piece flickered and danced against the walls. I saw the flame move. A glint underneath the silver-trimmed base. Something inhuman. Decorative but not quite. I didn’t hesitate. I skirted around the velvet runner and yanked the centerpiece aside with one hand. And dropped my stomach. Etched into the table itself in red chalk and burnt black ink was a charm circle.

I did as I was asked, and a few seconds later, the doors swung open. It reminded me very much of the lecture halls back at University, only fancier. It was a circular room, with a domed ceiling from which hung an elegant and intricate-looking chandelier made of multicolored crystals, but the light it gave off was a bright white. On the walls were screens that showed various things: pictures of places and people (are they suspects or victims?), graphs and charts in various languages, a diagram of symbols and words with corresponding values on one side (a probability map?), and even a projection of some sort of unfinished spell-circle. Anyone from the hallway can see what is inside the room through the glass. Nico leads his team by peeking at the glass windows one after another. All the rooms were empty. They turned their focus on the opposite side. The symbols must mean something. They opened the first door and stepped inside. The room was enormous. There is a large circular table with an unlit black candle in the middle of the room. Thirteen chairs surround the table with a distance that appears to be uniformly calculated. One wall was covered by dark brown wood cupboards with red undertones, and the opposite side had open shelves stacked with books, daggers, and amulets.

Callista. I stand in the middle of a hexagonal room with tall windows that are covered with black, lace curtains, shrouding the chamber with darkness. Surrounding me, there are six people, seated behind a hexagonal roundtable. Even if there weren’t anyone in the room, the way the chamber’s design is enough to make me intimidated. And the people gathered do not help at all.

Then he began to speak. "Gentlemen, the Round Table has been going on for 100 years. Its purpose is to safeguard the strength and honor of the werewolf. On this table, we have signed important documents, such as a truce with vampires and a peace treaty with mankind. We respect the wishes of the first king, and we should all exchange our ideas equally at this meeting." The first man on the left stood up. I couldn't see his face, but his voice was clear. I guess he must be under 30. It is surprising that our royal family has such young elders.
