The wounds were infected and festering, which had led to bacterial inflammation. Millie approached the side of Pierce's bed and gently rolled up his sleeve. His left arm was tightly bandaged, but fresh blood was slowly seeping through, staining the gauze.

My hands are what hurt—the sting of the piercings, the throbbing in my palms. I wipe at my forehead again, trying to clean the blood off, but it just smears.

Gabriella reached up to pinch her ear and continued looking through the photos. Her right ear began itching instead. She raised her hand to pinch it. Her left ear was still itchy and felt rather warm. Her earlobes began reddening involuntarily. Gabriella felt that something wasn't right. She abruptly straightened up, turned, and discovered that Henry was now behind her. His arms were propped against the back of the sofa as he bent down and blew into her ear. Earl came in, applying some liquid on my forehead as best as he could with my thrashing. My thrashing ceased as my body and eyes became heavy. I gave up and let myself succumb to the exhaustion and influence of the herbs.
