Well, I can spend almost a whole day in a huge bookstore. Angelo picked a post-apocalyptic book about survival and zombies. I’ve seen him watching a zombie television series last time. Maybe he’s into those kinds of books until now. On the other hand, I picked a cozy high fantasy with a low-stakes book. I’ve read a lot of things about this book on the internet. But ever since we moved to the town, it is not feasible to reach a bookstore. This is the perfect time to read the book along with a drink that we’re going to order.

I dug my heels into the horse’s side and raced forward. By the time I reached the gates. The sharp metallic scent of blood had already reached me. I dismounted before the horse had fully stopped. my gaze swept across the camp. The newly bult shelters still stood. Thank the heavens. “Your Highness.” A captain said, hurrying towards me. “Report.” He bowed. “The attackers set fire to the food tent. Most of the rations are gone.” He hesitated. “Two refugees were killed.” I closed my eyes briefly, releasing a breath I had not realized I was holding. “And our men?”

She had begun to turn into them. “No, no, I can't be one of them. No, I don't want to.” She cried, thinking back to before this apocalypse began. Back to when things were okay. Her family was still alive. Except they had died years back before the apocalypse even began. She was just a lonely girl, who met Ryan and fell in love. Barely conscious and close to turning, Ara dragged herself toward the toxic river near the edge of the city. The black water churned violently below, filled with chemical waste, rotting corpses, blood, and dangerous liquids dumped there after the apocalypse began.

"This is the Elysium Refuge. I'm in charge here." Elysium Refuge. I had heard that before. In the third year of the apocalypse, it became the largest and most stable human settlement known to exist. Rumor had it that it was equipped with a complete defense system, ample food supplies, and even had an ongoing research of the virus. "How did I..." I began, my voice hoarse. "Our scout team found you in the ruins," Iris said, her gaze studying me closely. "You were running a dangerously high fever. Your skin was cracked and healing in cycles. We almost thought you wouldn't make it."

After returning to Camp Arthor, I settled all of Sasha's paperwork and placed her at the hospital while Leo stayed by my side and followed me around. "You know that you don't have to keep following me around, don't you? I'm just a regular researcher now," I said with a sigh. After arriving at this base camp, the water crisis had been temporarily resolved for now. But there was an even greater challenge on the way, and it required more attention. Some doors still hung open. Others had blood smeared across them. No military. No police. No rescue convoys. Only silence, which was broken occasionally by distant sirens echoing through the valley below. The apocalypse had moved beyond panic. Now came the collapse.
