He lowered his head until his breath touched her hair. “I will not lie to you,” he said. “I will not promise things I cannot give. I do not promise not to hurt another person. I am not built for those kinds of promises and I don't want broken promises between us.” She looked up at him, calm and curious. “What I do promise,” he continued softly, “is that I will not hurt anyone unnecessarily.”
