Alicia muttered, flipping the book open. They decided to take turns, each reading a chapter aloud in a low voice. Kevin’s tone was steady, smooth, the kind that could make even dry text sound alive. When it was her turn, Alicia’s voice carried softer, sometimes tripping over archaic words, but he never laughed. He listened, his focus on the book like he was tuned into every syllable. An hour passed in the rhythm of their voices and the scratch of Kevin’s pen taking notes. Alicia’s eyelids grew heavy, her concentration waning, until one line snapped her fully awake.

I wasn’t even sure if he’d gotten everything settled with his frat brothers when he drove me to the airport in the morning. I tried to let those thoughts fade away while on my flight home. I put in my earbuds and decided to listen to one of the smutty werewolf audio books Hana has gotten me hooked on, Alpha Gray by CJ Primer, with Theo and Maddie as narrators. The book is HOT, and Theo’s voice… yeah, it makes for an enjoyable two-and-a-half-hour flight. I love how he changes his voice when speaking for each Alpha. Hana told me they’ve done the narration for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to listen.

She continued flipping to the next page. “Well you had better not let the book take up all of your time. You know we still have chores to carry out.” “Whatever,” she replied playfully with an eyeroll. Now she sat cross-legged on the bed, eyes sparkling as she read aloud, her voice stumbling over a few words but never losing its eagerness. “‘The knight… rode into the… the dark forest,’” she sounded the words carefully, lips moving slowly as she traced the lines with her finger. “He wasn’t… afraid, even though the trees were… whispering secrets.”

“We had a deal, remember. Don’t start complaining now..” “This is genuinely unhinged behavior.” “Tatiana.” The way he said my name made my mouth go dry. I muttered under my breath, “One day I’m going to force you into therapy at gunpoint,” and opened the book again. I started reading. My voice felt too loud at first, then settled into the quiet rhythm of the room. Kain closed his eyes and listened. Every now and then I’d catch myself changing my tone for dialogue without meaning to, or muttering corrections when the sentence was clunky. He never interrupted.

Yetunde reported numbers that continued to grow in the particular quiet way of a book that was moving through genuine recommendation rather than marketing momentum. The podcast with Funke had aired and had generated its own response — women writing to say they had listened to the conversation and then immediately bought the book, women who had read the book and found in the podcast something additional, the particular difference between the written voice and the spoken one that produced in listeners something the reading alone had not quite produced.
