Desk covered with books. Photo on the wall. Lamp on the nightstand. He stood in the middle of it. Turned in a circle. "This is where you've been," he said. "This is where I've been." He crossed to the desk. Picked up the book Clara had given her. "You're still reading this?"

It wasn’t anything like the libraries in Gabriel and Raphael’s estates but this room was beautiful in its own dark haunted way. I picked the one that had caught my attention because of Mario, The Art of War, and tucked it beneath my arm as I went through other books. When I picked up one of the heavy books that was on the top shelf which looked like no one had ever read it or even moved it from its place from the dust that was gathered in its cover, I cleaned it with my palm and realized that it wasn’t a book but a journal. There was one more. I picked it up too. I sat down on the floor and opened the journal first.

A few people got off here and there, but she didn’t leave until she was at the very top. What she found there surprised her. It was a jolting contrast. If the ground floor was a college rave, then the top floor was an elitist speakeasy for voyeurism enthusiasts. As she walked into the dimly lit room, she tried to contain her shock, not wanting to appear out of her wits. There were a few empty seats at the back where she entered from the short hallway and she sat down in the cozy chair. In front of her were rows of people who had full attention on the figures who were highlighted on the stage.

I am actually nervous going up to the top floor. It’s like being invited to the inner circle. We arrive at the top floor and the elevator opens to a small sitting room. We step out and directly across from us is a gorgeous fireplace that is surrounded by floor to ceiling bookshelves. Two oversized armchairs sit facing the fireplace. It is so inviting, I want to just plop down and get lost in a book. The room is bright white with dark wood beams across the ceiling and a dark wood floor covered in a very comfy looking area rug. It’s such a contrast to the lower floors, which are more neutral. The walls and furniture are pure white, the floor is darkwood to match the beams. Little accents

Alexander had carried Dom's books from the study where they'd been temporarily shelved while the small room was being sorted. The room was small — smaller than the locked room in the penthouse, which had been small itself, the footprint of a specific kind of intimacy rather than the grandeur of a dedicated space. But the window was right: the morning light came through it at exactly the angle that would make it the kind of room you went to in the morning to think about, which was what the room had always been for in the penthouse and what it would be for here.
