The laughter didn't make my side hurt anymore. "Damn straight. You should be too. They'll kill humans that know too much." He warned me, cutting my laughter short. "Noted." The room fell silent for a while as Tate busied himself with random things. "Hey, Kiran?" Tate finally cut the silence. "Yeah, what's up?" "You know I'm looking for a roommate. Mine found his mate a couple of weeks ago and moved out with her. How about it? It's $400 a month for everything and the fridge is always stocked."

Roommate needed: Male or female, doesn’t smoke, tidy, can cook tasty meals is a plus, minds their business – I scoffed at the roommate ad, is he looking for a roommate or does he want a maid? “And you’re allergic to shirts. Let’s meet in the middle.” He reached for a napkin and a pen. “Great. Let’s draft a clause.” I raised an eyebrow. “A clause?” He scribbled dramatically and held it up. THE ROOMMATE CLAUSE • No loud sex after 10PM • No nakedness in common areas unless mutually agreed • No falling in love I stared at it. “You’re kidding.” He pushed it across the counter. “Sign here.” “Where’s the clause about you not touching yourself in the living room?”

“My parents always do this big, chaotic thing. Food everywhere, Christmas movies on repeat, cousins running around like feral animals, aunts arguing over board games. It’s loud. It’s messy. It’s… nice. You’d fit right in.” I stared at him. He hurried on, words tumbling faster. “I mean—not as, like—not as my boyfriend or anything. Just… as a friend. Roommate. Someone who doesn’t want to spend the holidays eating takeout alone in an empty off-campus apartment while the heat’s set to sixty to save money.” The word *boyfriend* hung between us anyway, bright and unignorable, even though we’d both been careful not to say it out loud yet. My throat tightened.

Tatiana was alarmed to see me. Tahlia had not assigned me any tasks, so I switched to polite mode. “Hello, Tatiana,” I said sweetly with a little curtsy. I could see her face slowly twist, and she seemed angry. “Fake! You’re so fake! Urgh!” “Tatiana, what are you talking about?” An elderly lady with a cane appeared from behind her. She squinted at me and pulled out her reading glasses. “And who is this?” “Grandma, this is my friend, Yvonne Zane. I switched dorms, and she’s my new roommate.”

“Your roommate isn’t around much?” “Yeah, he’s a final-year student. Barely here.” He paused, then added, “I wish I could leave Liam,” I muttered under my breath, not realizing he’d heard. “What?” Blake looked up. “You stay with Liam?” “Uhmm… yeah,” I admitted, no point in lying. “But I want to leave as soon as possible.” “That’s bad,” he said seriously. “You two are already rivals. If my roommate moves out, you can come here. It’s only for this semester anyway.”

“Fine. So you’re my roommate.” My roommate? That’s impossible! “What’s your name?” “I’m… Iris.” He nodded. “And I’m Kevin Halkos. Be calm and don’t bother me.” Then he turned around and entered one of the rooms, closing the door behind him, leaving me standing in the living room like a new piece of furniture that didn’t know where it had been placed. How could my roommate be a male? Is this normal here? Or have I entered an extra chapter of a never-ending nightmare?
