He made a noise of surprise, grabbed his arm, and muttered, "Asshole." The cat yowled and ran off, disappearing into the night. "Are you okay?" I asked. Kit slowly turned around, flexing his arm as the bright red pinprick vanished out of sight. Without so much as a mark. "Yeah, I heal fast." Those green eyes flickered from his feet up to me again, face darkening even more. Kit was so cute when he blushed. "You sure you don't want me to look at that?" I wondered out loud. "Cat scratch fever is no joke."

The blood started gushing out from my already inflamed foot. Still paralyzed with fear, I was unable to scream. A sick feeling rushed up to my chest. It felt like I was choking on my heart.

He shook his head and said, "It's nothing. It's just a few scratches. Zoey's not that delicate." I used to be afraid of cats. Five years ago, a stray cat had pounced on me. The shock was so severe that I lost the baby I had been carrying for eight months.

I was just getting ready for a nap when Lenny's message came through. "Seven thousand dollars—what a lucky number. It's the Christmas season, so of course we can't shortchange our furbabies. This is my bonus. Our cat is a little princess, and she deserves only the best." I didn't read the rest of his messages, because the moment I saw seven thousand dollars, I was so shocked that all my sleepiness vanished. I quickly typed back, "Seven thousand dollars?"
