Such a fucking genius I was. She was curled up in the bed, her back to the wall, arms wrapped around herself like she was holding her own broken pieces together. She’d been through too much. More than anyone should. And though she smiled for Layla, and joked and laughed, I saw it—the way her smile dropped the moment she thought no one was looking. I leaned forward in my chair, watching her on the screen. She shifted in her sleep. And then— A shadow moved. My chest tightened. I stared harder, squinting my eyes at the shadow I saw on the little green screen. The door didn’t open. Nothing made a sound when they had come in.

“You’re drooling, Little River.” He teases lightly, and I flush. “Sorry” I murmur, but before he can say anything, something moves beside him and moves towards me as if coming in for a hug. I scream and jump back, only to take a close look… What in the Dr. Facilier shit, is this? Is that his shadow casually coming my way? “I-uh-I…” “Back.” He says, and the shadow seems to deflate sadly and then retreat into his actual shadow.

The Shadows had become an integral part of my existence, a constant companion that had been by my side for centuries. I had grown accustomed to their silent obedience, their willingness to wait for my next command.

But what the Shadows did just made them closer still to each other. Their journey together started when they were just seven, after they made their contract accidentally. Both of them didn’t know what to do. They were just mentioning a bunch of stuff and promises to each other when green and bluish light, the colors of the Shore, suddenly enveloped their hands and their personal sigils were already on each other’s left hands.
