It also spread down her torso to her legs. The more the tendrils consumed Nozomi, the more the shadow melted away, as if they were melding into one.

My eyes began to turn black, a sign that Nero was gaining the upper hand, and I knew I was running out of time. With a Herculean effort, I fought to maintain control, but it was a losing battle. The kind of chaos that eats everything in its path. Figures darted between trees and sculptures, flitting through hedges like wraiths. Muzzle flashes burst like fireflies in the dark—short, brutal flashes of violence, gone as quickly as they came. Some of the shadows I recognized. My men. Moving in practiced formation. Efficient. Lethal. Others wore the snake insignia. Viktor's. I exhaled slowly and checked the chamber of my pistol. Loaded. Full clip. One in the chamber. I was ready.

“KIT!” Siron’s cry fractured the air already thick with hisses and snarls. Time seemed to slow. He watched the small shadow, like a bat made of smoke and hatred, lunge directly at his friend’s face. Its tiny red eyes gleamed with hunting glee. Instinct took over. Siron, still dizzy and with his ankle burning, shoved Kit with all his strength. They both tumbled onto the cold marble floor, narrowly dodging the attack. The shadow hovered above their heads, hissed in frustration, before circling back to strike again.

He bit into her neck deeply; I saw his hands scratching at her chest while biting further. I screamed as blood filled his mouth and ran down her neck. She screamed and tried fighting him off to no ability. She hit him and he grabbed her arm throwing it aggressively. The sound of shattering bones filling the room with her screams that started to die as well. I felt like I couldn’t look away, the dark one bit harder and ripped her throat out. I screamed louder in terror. Everything that was rushing back into my mind was the grizzly scene from my parents death.

“Sorry for the misunderstanding, Mr. Harvard. We were following breach protocol.” Elliot nodded stiffly. “No problem, Arnold. You were doing your job.” He turned to face the room, raising his voice. “Everyone, stand down. This is Northstar William. He is our newest recruit. More importantly… he is the host of the entity known as Shadowalker.” A murmur ran through the assembled personnel. Amy managed a small, cautious smile. “He looks… young.” Northstar met her gaze, and for a second, the weary mask slipped, showing something almost like recognition. “Actually, I’m 17,” he said. Then he added, the cryptic edge returning, “I’ve been 17… like forever.”
