My mind raced, trying to comprehend the sudden turn of events. As I held my breath, the door swung open once again, and a hulking, bald shifter loomed into view. His nose bore the marks of multiple fractures, giving his face a gnarled appearance. Thick, unruly eyebrows perched above his squishy, pink complexion, rendering his small eyes almost inconspicuous within the landscape of his features.

Attack! I said to the warriors through the pack link. My warrior consisted of eighteen werewolves. Some of them had the ability to fully shift into a wolf, while the same remained with the form of a man but with the abilities of a wolf. It is said that a shape shifter is stronger than those who could not shift but I thought differently. With the right training and guidance, they are both strong in their own ways.

A mix of awe and fear of the power enclosed in those frail receptacles of glass sent shivers down my spine. I held up a vial. 'This is the answer. “Breathe, Akiro, breathe.” Akiro flushed in embarrassment as he realised he had just rambled towards Terrence, but the guy was just looking at him in amusement. “Sorry, I just got really, really curious,” he said. “Again, it’s alright,” the shapeshifter said, brushing off his apology. “And to simply answer your questions: we can only change if it’s a living being we’re shifting to. No need to touch or chant something. Just as long as we know what they looked like. Though we can miss a few details because it wasn’t like we could look at someone else’s whole features. Just the surface.”

His chest trembled with the precarious lift of hope. “Danny, I want to explain a few things. They’re important.” Mahisar’s voice smoothed into instructor and oracle. “You are a shape-shifter. What sets you apart is this: when you phase into an animal, it becomes wholly you. You never depart from it. It is not a separate spirit, as it is with were-beings. Were-beings must share the spirit of the animal they inhabit. That duality can make them weak. You are not weak.”

His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.

A low, keening wail escaped her lips. Suddenly, a dark shape materialized before us . It was a shadowy figure, but it didn't remain static. It began to shift and contort, taking on various forms. One moment it was a towering figure with glowing red eyes, the next it was a serpentine creature with scales that shimmered like black diamonds. My grip on Ava tightened. "What is this thing?" Shirer's voice was low and urgent. "It's a shape-shifter, a creature born from darkness and chaos. It's a harbinger of the evil that's coming.”

The collision caused a huge bang. Taking advantage of his vulnerable position on the ground, I straddled his waist placing a hand around his neck minimizing his airway. The natural body of a shapeshifter was undoubtedly weird to feel. It was foggy and airy but had a solid side at the same time which created this unsettling texture. The shapeshifter had his breath cut for a second. I bet he didn't expect this kind of strength from me. Usually, shapeshifters aren't that good in combat but they are great at making strategies and thinking.

I can feel the heat surrounding me, filling the room with energy and light. The Shifters stare at the shape, their red eyes piercing the light with its darkness. After a second, they all begin to enter the form, taking it on board as if they were all in line to enter a cruise and embark on a magical journey. Amazement still overwhelms me as each of the Shifters enters the form. I can feel it pulling at me, and I hesitantly let go. The shape moves away, and I can see that it really does look like a boat, flying through the sky as if it were the ocean. It takes me a few seconds after the boat disappears to realize what I had done.
