I felt myself emptying out, becoming a hollow shell. But it was worth it. If she could live, it was all worth it. The silver blade sank completely into my heart. The altar exploded with a blinding light, illuminating the entire hall like daylight. And then, everything went dark.

Kai smirks, “I think so. They’re only eyes, they can’t be that bad, can they?” Ash leans forward a little, and nods. She purses her lips and reaches for the glasses, pulling them down slowly. Her eyes are a vibrant dark-green which makes Kai think of malachite stones he’d seen with the darker lines radiating out from the centre. But that wasn’t the truly astonishing thing about her eyes. The ring around her pupils, with thin lines radiating out towards the edge of the iris, is bright orange. But the orange was glowing softly.

I’ve seen her stubborn jaw lift in defiance more times than I can count. But I’ve never looked at her like this. Never paused or allowed my attention to linger. Her hair falls in warm chestnut waves around her shoulders, catching the torchlight in copper threads. And her eyes— One deep brown. The other silver. Not gray. Silver. My Lycan goes very still. Elira will want her, he murmurs. Marked. I stiffen. Don’t start. But he’s not wrong. There’s something there. Something that makes my chest tighten in a way that has nothing to do with fear.
