Out of pure reaction, I grabbed onto the sides of the vent, but it did no good as we all fell. Not realizing how high up we were, or our exact location, my eyes widened in surprise when I saw a deep dark abyss below us. Not being able to see anything, I wasn’t sure how much of a fall we had in store for us. It felt like forever and a day before I slammed down hard on solid ground. I landed on my back, with a loud thud, knocking the wind straight out of me. Rolling to my side, I coughed a few times as I tried to catch my breath. My eyes took a moment to adjust. Wherever we had fallen to, didn’t have any light.

We knew we had fallen into trances, but what could we do. “Have a seat.”

“I said that?” “You didn’t even ask.” “You just decided.” “And from that day on, we were inseparable.” Nova listened quietly. “We did everything together,” Kael continued. “We climbed trees, played hide-and-seek, got into trouble…” “You were always dragging me into something.” Nova raised an eyebrow. “Me?” “Oh, definitely you.” “You once convinced me we could build a treehouse.” “How’d that go?” Kael laughed. “We fell out of the tree.” Nova burst into laughter.

My Ana. Finally, we fall over the cliff together.

Because of all of this. Both of us were going down, and I wasn't sure if we'd come back up.

Push. I feel a shove. I fall, losing my footing. Alex catches me mid-air, wraps me tight, and we crash down the stairs together. Roll. Hit. Scratch. Thud.

"Then we should get you to the hospital." Leo pulled Archer straight into his arms, eliciting a surprised shriek from Archer. "I'm not going," Leo said with a pout. "You are my cure." And so, Archer found himself "curing" Leo over and over again that night, and he was so tired by the end of it all that he fell asleep for a long time after that to recover.

I was falling. And I didn’t know if I wanted to stop.

My feet left the ground. And then I was falling — landing directly on top of him. Oh no.

But this. This quiet, slow, inevitable pull between us. The edge we were both standing on. And the terrifying truth that one of us was going to fall first.
