I know for a fact that if I was truly settled and contented with what I have for the past centuries, I would have died by now. But I’m not dead, so my heart hasn’t reached it’ contentment. And while I don’t wish to see how it ends, there’s a longing curiosity inside of me that seeks to know what it is could sedate a monster like me. There was none, I thought. Until it happened. We sat completely still across from each other. Not a word was spoken. In the background, you could faintly hear the birds chirping, but that was the only sound. I tried to concentrate on his book—the one he had given me the day before—but it was boring. It was about a beautiful young woman who needed a big, strong man to come and save her, so instead I looked at him.

Sounds took his place, the scrape of wood legs grating against stone, the hollow rumble of ladders pushed across grooves worn smooth by the years, and the muted thuds of tomes dropped onto long tables. Whispers echoed like a hive stirring at the edge of waking. Pages turned, one after another, the frantic shuffle rising and falling like the rush of wings. The sound alone hollowed my chest.

I reached out, my fingers trembling as they brushed the leather cover. The scent of wildflowers and ozone was so strong it made my head spin. Unlike the other floating books, this one sat heavy and grounded on the pedestal, as if it were the anchor for the entire room. Its cover was unlike anything they had ever seen; it wasn't leather or cloth, but looked as though it had been woven from moonlight itself.
