Cassandra Miles moved closer to them. The squirrels reacted as if they knew who had been taking care of them all this time. They acted friendly toward Miles, making him chuckle softly in response. I believed, at that moment, that they were truly connected. “Zin, Zen, Ai, and Ri.” He pointed at each squirrel one by one as he named them. I looked at Miles in amazement—he could really come up with names that quickly. As I glanced at Sebastian, he was smiling too.

I chastised him but he kept the wolfish grin on his muzzle. “No, Stormy, dear. Let me show you!” Dora barked. Moving incredibly fast, she jumped across Stormy and held his tail with her mouth. My wolf didn’t react, only gave her a flirting look, his ears stirred up. Dora made a fun sound that resembled a whisper and suddenly a group of more than ten squirrels marched to the almost empty ground and jumped on Stormy, walking on him as if he were a tree.

I do not talk about that with anyone. The air starts to buzz. “Duck!” I yell. Arrows start flying through the air. I stop all of them as I run forward. “Stop!” I yell at the witches running from me. They do what they are told. The rest of the wolves catch up to me along with Joe, which is what, I call him now. They take the four witches to their version of a compound for questioning.

Theo, his heart pounding with anticipation, held his hand steady, his eyes fixed on the squirrel. Slowly, the squirrel reached out, its delicate paws accepting the crackers. Theo, his face alight with joy, watched as the squirrel scurried back to its branch, its cheeks bulging with the tasty morsels. "Mama Hazel, I helped the squirrel!" he exclaimed, his voice bursting with pride. Mama Hazel, her heart brimming with warmth, knelt down and hugged him tightly. "You did, Theo," she said, her voice filled with admiration. "You were so kind to share your crackers with the squirrel."

It was hard for her to imagine how she would feel when she had to let go of the grown-up Sky in the future. "Oh, Mama, Papa, look at that! Isn't that a squirrel?" Sky pointed at the rocks. Alice and Edmund turned their heads. "Yes, Honey. Your eyesight is very sharp." "Could it be that he just came out of a millions-year-old cave?" Alice sighed in amusement. "Honey? Your imagination is very high. How could a squirrel be that old?" Sky chuckled again. "I'm kidding, Mama. A squirrel's lifespan is around 5-10 years. Unless, it's trapped in ice like in the Ice Age movie."

I didn’t care who because I knew even the rogues would take my foot out before kidnapping me or whatever. I hate whatever. “Here! I am here!” I said anticipatorily, and out of the bushes came… a squirrel. And from the way its eyes widened, it wasn’t going to help me for sure. It burrowed back into the thick green before I could beg it to at least be my company while I slowly bleed to death and die. I was left with silence and the depth of my pain once more. I squeezed my eyes shut and sobbed, then heard another round of shuffling. What now? A rabbit?

With a mischievous grin, he blurted out, "Mommy, Daddy, do you know what happened at school today? I saw a squirrel doing cartwheels in the playground!" His innocent comment took everyone by surprise, and laughter erupted around the table. Lucy's eyes crinkled with joy as she giggled, reaching out to ruffle Ethan's hair. Darren chuckled, his laughter resonating through the room. "Oh, really, Ethan? A cartwheeling squirrel? That must have been quite a sight!" Ethan nodded, his face beaming with pride. "Yes, Daddy! It was the funniest thing I've ever seen! All the kids were laughing and clapping. I wish you could have been there too!"

"I saw three squirrels in the bathroom." "Squirrels?" I raised my almost knit eyebrows. "Oh, you mean the Jeverics? They must greet you. They are usually interested in something new." The girl seemed genuinely interested in these treacherous squirrels. She put her glass back down and turned to me. It was the first time she looked me in the eye after the previous incident in the bathroom. "Is it true that you are simultaneously a Lycan King and a wizard?" "Ah," I said. "So you still doubt me?"

There were beakless birds, armadillo squirrels, and disturbingly large insects that buzzed around in circles as a muddy path ran deep and in different directions through the center of this colorful madness. The birds flew out of their nests and took to the skies up and above the noise, searching to catch the fattest worm. The squirrels jumped in and out of trees like monkeys but smaller and with their stomachs spread out like a mat; but their backs were as hard as steel. Hovering silently till they landed on branches the size of mallets. I watched, breathing heavily, and wondering what else might be lurking inside the walls of dark green that stood spread out before me and behind them.
