I want to go after him to see if he is okay. However, holding myself back, I close the door and step back into my home's safety, trying to find the solace that is missing from my life.

More confident. But the closeness didn’t change. Kieran stayed near. Too near. And Eli couldn’t ignore it anymore. “…You don’t have to stand this close every time,” he said. Kieran didn’t step back. “Yes, I do.” Eli frowned. “…Why?” Kieran paused. Just for a second. Then said: “Because others won’t keep their distance from you.” Eli stared at him. Something about that answer felt… off. Not wrong.

A thin shiver works its way through me as he continues to play with my hand. I clear my throat and focus on the question. "Good." His nearness has my nervousness draining away. It's just so easy to be with him. "It went really well." He closes the distance between us before kissing me again and whispering against my lips, "Are you going to stay over tonight?"

But something close. Something human.

This was another way of me telling her she was only safe next to me. I leaned in towards her ears and whispered, "You need to stay close to me. If anything bad happens, there's no way I can figure it out. Don't forget we can't link." "Ok." "Good girl." We took our clothes off, placing them beside a tree.

“We need to up our security and you need to stay by my side all the time.” Exactly what I was thinking.

The thought comes suddenly. Uninvited. Sharp. And completely inappropriate. I huff out a quiet breath, almost annoyed with myself. Gods. Listen to yourself. But the thought doesn’t leave. It lingers. Turning over in my mind in a way that feels far too serious for something I should dismiss so easily. Would it stabilize the bond further? Would it stop this constant pull, this constant need to stay close, to remain within reach, to not stray too far without consequence? Would it make this easier?

Perhaps stare at the sky or talk about anything. Releasing a slow sigh, I shove the thoughts at the very back of my mind. Reminding myself of the simple rules that I have been following. Don't allow emotions to get in the way. Don't get too close.

"Don’t let anyone get too close to you. If you need anything, just let me know." She nodded, her fingers slightly tightening around her drink. "I will."
