I waved the tablet in triumph—then froze. I had expected stock reports, shady business emails, maybe even a list of people he planned to fire. But what I actually found? A romance novel. Not just any romance novel. My favorite romance novel. I gasped. “Pierce Carter… are you seriously reading Falling for the Tycoon?” His jaw twitched. “Give. It. Back.” I ignored him, eyes glued to the screen. “Oh my God—you’re on Chapter 12! That’s literally the steamiest scene in the book.” My jaw dropped. “Wait. Are you stalking my Kindle? Are you some kind of literary creep who tracks my reading habits?”

He slowly led the way to the big couch, his eyes going from my boobs to the red g-string I had on. "I know you always get lost in those books of yours, don't think I haven't seen the kind of things you read.." he paused, my cheeks flushed as he made me sit on the couch. He got down on one knee in front of me, his hand still around my waist. "And I know your little head has cooked up fantasies.. fantasies of what you want to experience, of what what you want me to do to you." He paused and lowered his head to my drenched panties, taking a long, seductive whiff.

I don’t know. This is typical, when I want time to hurry up, something jumps in the way and slows it down. Our plane is delayed by two hours and that just pisses me off. What am I gonna do for two hours? I didn’t pack my e-reader or bring a paperback book to entertain myself with. Guess I have to go into duty-free and see what they have there that catches my eye for this trip. Walking into the duty-free store I head straight into the direction of the books and magazines they have on sale. They had a wide variety of books in all different genres. But I kind of fancy something contemporary, romantic, and a little funny. That does limit my options down a little, but not by much. Then I see it.

It was a very expensive ride. "Of course it is, this is a memory that I'll engrave in my head forever hehe." "Oh really? There were better moments than this though." I can't believe this guy is such a clichè. I guess he wanted to do some romantic stuff he saw on tv. "Better moments than this? I can't possibly think of anything better than riding the ferris wheel on the sunset with you, isn't that the most romantic?" Ugh, just like what I've thought! What a clichè.

Back then, he had used this trick to win over her heart too. Looking back, she finally realized how stupid she was before. A man’s promise was only a lie. All the romantic gestures were traps to bedazzle the woman’s heart. The corners of her lips twitched into a sardonic smile as she held the bouquet of flowers. Matthew thought success was near upon seeing her smile. Immediately, he did as he had rehearsed before and led her toward the hall that was covered with fresh flowers. He readjusted his emotions, knelt one knee, and held her hands. “Christina, I like you. Be my girlfriend.”

And I didn't help myself either, I constantly fed fears with stories of toxic, manipulative love, how it started always started with flowers and charm, and then, one day, the switch would flip. I promised myself I would never experience that. Romance belonged in stories. Fantasies not real life. Still, I couldn’t deny the memory of his touch. How warm his hand had felt on the small of my back. How perfectly he held me. How one dance ignited sparks across my skin. And my book? It wasn’t helping. The vivid steamy descriptions made me restless, And yet, part of me wasn’t ready to climb out of that mental gutter.

"Not recently, but yeah. A friend of mind passed some around last year. I've been reading her cast-offs." Which friend? And what kind of romance books? "I read a few." He shook his head. Lumen wrinkled her nose. "You have?" "Yeah, people sent all kinds of things in care packages. There were always a few romance books in the bins for us to pick through. I figured you always see women sitting by pools, relaxing and reading one. Maybe that's what I need?" "You seriously read one?" she asked. "I read...a dozen? They gave me too much anxiety. Too much will-they-won't-they, back-and-forth business. Too personal, too high stakes, too real for me to actually relax and read."

he interrupted. “Stop following me Jax,” I commanded establishing my authority changing the conversation because at the end of the day he was just a massive fan of mine. “No, I want recommendations on books, preferably the slow burns with two people trying to fight their connection when they were soulmates from the moment they met but they were blind.” I know what he was doing. He was trying to describe our romance but ours was a tragedy, not a romance in my books anyway. I huffed annoyed and played his game, by saying “I would recommend Birthday Girl by Penelo-“

Biting my nail, I opened my Kindle app from my phone and scrolled through the romance novels. I’d never been a huge romance reader, more of fantasy and sci-fi, but it wouldn’t hurt, would it? To gain a little experience? I giggled to myself and opened up the first one with a buff guy on the front. I’ll just read a few chapters.
