Elias listened from the shadows, his expression dark. And through the chaos of the debate, one sentence was repeated over and over like a mantra: *The anomaly must be protected.* The memory vanished, leaving Ava breathless. The anomaly. It hadn't been an object, a weapon, or a piece of ancient technology. They had been talking about Luca. All along. The First Hunger laughed again, a sound devoid of any real joy. Dannie picked up another joint from her room and went to the library. Among the ancient books was one of the largest collections of werewolf history in the world. If there was anything on Balric or the black book it was there. She gathered a variety of titles that looked promising and lit the joint. Taking a hit, Dannie opened the first book. Inside was mostly what she already knew.

Getting close to your target is always the difficult part. “Are you looking for someone?” A voice shook her out of her reverie. Her eyes smoothly glide to her right, where she finds a chic blonde looking at her. Anna scans the woman—short, petite, youthful face—and finds the pile of books on her arms. Almost all are about laws. An obvious law student. Someone that belongs here. Yet, her voice was cheerful and innocent, her stare pure and kind. “Yes, actually. Do you know Yezekael Ferrer?” She straightforwardly asks, catching the woman off-guard. Anna doesn’t miss the tinge of pink creeping up the girl’s cheeks from her neck.

Raymond’s name wasn’t in it. But that didn’t mean nothing. Names could be hidden. Blood could be masked. But the trace... that was harder to erase. I flipped to the back. To the page where ancient anomalies were recorded. The ones who were born outside the blood web, but still tied to it. There were only six. Each one marked for death. Each one wiped out before they could reach maturity. And now maybe—just maybe—there was a seventh. I whispered his name. And the book shivered.

Suddenly, the air in the garden seems to bend and shimmer, like heat waves rising from an asphalt surface on a hot day. These aren’t heat waves though. For one thing, the temperature is very pleasant—mid-sixties, I’d guess—and more importantly, the lines are horizontal, not vertical. A barely audible high-pitched whine accompanies the disturbance in the air. The whine and the strange bending of the air are the only signs anyone other than Radar gets that an Anomaly is unfolding. If you’re unfortunate enough to be caught in it, it’s too late. No one is quite sure what happens to people trapped in an Anomaly, but we do know they’re never seen again.

It was as if the anomaly was speaking to him, not through words or sounds but through sensations, a deep, almost physical communication that resonated with the darkness in his soul. This communication, this unsettling connection with the anomaly, was a turning point. It was either madness or a potential path. He felt drawn, compelled towards the unknown, toward the core of the anomaly itself. It might lead to oblivion, yet he found a strange sort of hope within this terrifying surrender to the unknown, a perverse sense of liberation, like stepping off a cliff into the dark to end his torment. “They classified you as an anomaly, Samantha. Power without a blueprint.” She leaned into my touch, her sass returning like a sharpened blade. “An anomaly? I’ve been called a lot of things, but ‘statistically improbable’ is definitely my favorite. So, what? Am I a glitch in the matrix?” “In our world,” I said, looking down into her defiant eyes, “an anomaly is someone the Council cannot control. You are the variable that breaks their math.” She smirked, trailing a finger down the lapel of my shirt. “Well, you know what they say about math, Lucien. If the equation is wrong, you don’t fix the variable. You tear down the whole damn formula.”

I yelled, rolling on the ground and getting to my feet as the Anomaly shook itself off from crashing into a garbage can. Barrier spell, I thought, panic clawing at my throat as the Anomaly padded towards me. Under the bright streetlights, I could clearly see it. It was like a very big panther and it wasn't black but a rather dark brown with spots of red fur. And instead of having a tail it had three snake-like things waving around behind it. The tails hissed at me and I realized the red spots weren't fur, but blood. Its red eyes glowed with hunger. Oh, lord, this is bad. This is really, really bad.
