I whispered. I reached out for him as the wolves closed in on me, but before he could get to me, the nearest one turned and leapt. No wind blew, and no animals made a sound; the place felt dead. “Aiden, Axel, where are you” I shouted again, pushing myself up from the ground. Moments before, I had been surrounded by my brothers, my mate and a hell of a lot of Sun Valley Wolves, set on ripping our throats out. I vaguely remember Ayla’s father diving right in front of a wolf determined to hurt my girl; I knew it would kill her if her father got hurt, so I didn’t even think I just pushed him out the way, then pain, so much pain. -Flashback- Barry was busy cooking his meal when he heard a knock on his door. He was in hiding because a coven of witches was hunting him. He killed a witch high priestess two months ago, and since then he has been hexed, poisoned, and almost killed multiple times.

As the recently chosen Protector, I knew I had to show power and unity, even though I had doubts inside. Just as I was about to call the meeting to order, Asher's team returned. They are half-carried, half-dragged a wild-eyed werewolf between them. “We caught him near the border,” Asher reported. “He keeps babbling about something called 'the awakening.'” The captured werewolf's eyes rolled wildly, focusing on nothing. “It comes,” he muttered, his voice raspy and strained. “The awakening… the old powers… returning…” Then he collapsed, unconscious.

"Empath awakening records. Not many, but enough to establish a pattern." "And?" "And Mira was correct. Every recorded awakening occurred under circumstances of great emotional extremity. A mother witnessing her child die. A lover suffering the greatest betrayal. A warrior experiencing complete defeat." She gestures toward the texts. "The circumstances vary, but the extent of likeness is complete emotional saturation. The sort that destroys all defenses, all shields, all attempts at mastery." "So I have to be emotionally devastated in order to tap my full potential." I fall into a chair. "That's one heck of a requirement."

CHAPTER 1 I wake before the bell tolls, as I always do. The air in my cell is cool and still, heavy with the faint scent of damp stone and beeswax from last night's vigil candles. My habit lies folded at the foot of the narrow bed, a stark white reminder of the vows that bind me. Final vows, taken just six months ago in the chapel's golden light, with Mother Superior's approving gaze upon me. I slip into it now, the fabric whispering against my skin like a secret I dare not voice. Purity. Obedience. Chastity. They are my armor, my cage.

I only shook my head, stepping forward again. The divine light swirled around me. It licked my skin like fire, yet did not burn. My blood raced, my senses sharpened to edges I had never known. Priests collapsed outright, their bodies convulsing from the overload of power. Young omegas quivered, eyes wide with awe and fear, some screaming as the bond I carried surged beyond comprehension. Those once silent, obedient, submissive… now rose, trembling, yet stronger than before. The first wave of awakening was visible, raw, and undeniable. They were no longer mine to command, and yet they moved in harmony with the pulse I had sent outward. The old hierarchy was dissolving before my eyes.
