My heart, once burning with passion, now laid in ruins. Without hesitation, I dove into the river. The December water was ice-cold. It felt like sharp needles against my skin. A harsh, stinging sensation filled my throat. The dark water below seemed like a gaping abyss, waiting to devour everything. It was just like what had happened back then. 'William, I can’t hold on much longer. 'What else can I do? Marrying you has been my only wish in this life.' Biting my tongue to stay conscious, I frantically searched the riverbed for the lost ring.

Blood from her wounds spread through the water and turned it red. She could not swim. She struggled with all her strength, but she could not get out. I strained to catch a glimpse of the person approaching me, my heart pounding with dread at what was to come. (Before the Incident) My evening had started innocently enough, just hanging out with my best friend Brenda as we often did. We ended up at a club, where I indulged in one too many drinks, losing myself in the music and the buzz of alcohol. Brenda cheered me on as I danced, her encouragement fueling my uninhibited movements. But as the night wore on, the effects of the alcohol began to overwhelm me, and I stumbled towards the bathroom. After easing myself, I went towards the mirror to rinse my hands. I looked at myself in the mirror, laughing and admiring myself.

Something inside him broke. His possessiveness detonated. He surged forward. A massive hand locked onto her waist. Heat, violence, and restraint collapsed at once. The moment his fangs moved toward her neck— WHOOOM—! Outside the panoramic glass— Deep beneath the frozen Arctic sea— A green light ignited. It pierced the darkness like a blade. The entire cabin was washed in eerie green. Then— the deep-sea radar exploded. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP—! Seven thousand meters below the ice shelf.

It is the only gift I have left to give them. “South face. Bay nine.” Sarah brings the wounded sub around and lets it fall, controlled, down the last of the trench wall toward the coordinates, and the dark outside the viewport begins, for the first time in hours, to lighten. Not to daylight. Nothing so kind. A deep dim glow resolves out of the black below us, blue-white and vast, the lit underside of something enormous built into the wall of the world, and as we sink toward it the scale of it keeps refusing to stop, lights upon lights upon lights, a city’s worth of them, burning at the bottom of an ocean that has never known the sun.
