It was real. Hope was in the center of it all. She was fourteen now, her eyes bright and purely human. She was teaching a group of younger children how to use a short-wave radio, her laughter echoing up to the balcony. She wasn't an "Oracle" or a "Variable" anymore. Now that we know Hope is anemic, explaining her fatigue and weakness these past days, I want her to start treatment as soon as possible. We returned home alone. My parents said they would stay until they could be sure everyone was okay. I knew my father Bruno wouldn’t leave his friends of decades; after all, he is a renowned businessman today thanks to Gustavo Lira, who greatly supported the birth of “Smoke.” “Mahjub?” Hope called me from the bed. The young boy looks around but he can’t take his eyes off the big man. He notices a small girl hiding under a thick bush and the young boy approaches her, “why are you hiding here?” “He will kill all of us!” the girl sobs. “Who?” The girl points at the big man whose eyes are burning red and dangerous, “he destroyed our pack and now he is here to kill everyone.” “Nobody can save us?” the young boy asks. The girl nods her head and points her finger at him, “you! You will save everyone, you are our hope.”

I glare at him. “Sorry, baby. Go on.” His eyes are still glittering with anger. I roll my eyes. “After listening to all the voicemails, I listened to the last unknown number.” I scan the voicemail and play it to them. “Hello, Mackenzie. You’re alone now, aren’t you? At last, it’s our time together, and soon you’re gonna be mine, sweet Mackenzie.” Everyone gasps and Sebastian growls, fisting his hands.

“But you... you gave us hope. And still seem to have fight left in you. Don’t let them take that.” I want to ask her what she means by that, but it seems the few words she spoke have exerted her as her eyes shut and her breathing becomes more labored. I look around at the sea of cages, at the faces of once proud and powerful beings, now reduced to shadows of themselves. “They won’t win,” I mutter to myself, my resolve firm despite the despair clawing at me. The grizzled male suddenly speaks, his voice gravelly and laced with weariness. “They already have. You’re in their trap, just like the rest of us. The only thing left is to survive.”

The two of us had lost all hope of ever finding a happy ending such a long time ago. When we agreed to be the Witch Queen's mate some of that hope returned, as we had both thought that maybe if we put in an effort this time, we could actually be happy. I wasn't so sure about that anymore though, but he disagreed. He still believes that we can help her, or more that we were chosen to help her through this dark period in her life. Unfortunately we can't do anything if she won't let us though, which is what I have to keep reminding him. Regardless, she was our problem now, so we just had to figure out a way to live with her.
