When I shake my head with a little laugh, he steps closer, his hand lifting to my chin. “I see how Ronan treats you. Everyone does.” He grips my chin firmly when I try to duck away. “But I also see how he looks at you. Like you’re his.” My breath catches at this, because that’s the actual reason why Ronan despises me. Because I made the mistake to share the only thought my wolf had ever let me read in a long while. Mate. “Do you think you’re his?” My brows furrow in confusion and I watch as his lips quirk. I see his eyes fall to his hold on my chin. Or to my lips?

She lifts her hand, tilting it so moonlight spills across the soft skin of her wrist— And suddenly silver glows beneath it. Not a tattoo. Not magic. Not something artificial. A mark. Moon-bright. Alive. My breath leaves me in a quiet, stunned exhale. “A moon-mark,” I whisper. She nods, jaw tightening as if bracing for disappointment. “Since you’re my mate, you have a right to know. I got my wolf early—way early. And she’s powerful. People say moon-marked wolves are rare but…” She swallows. “Some think rare means dangerous.”

My heart, though, it beat only for the moment school ended. Mr. Nelson cleared his throat from the front of the class, silencing the room with a single look. "Today," he began, his voice steady, "we continue with one of the most important parts of our history- the origins of the mate bond, and the gift of the Mood Goddess herself." He wrote the words Selene-The Moon Goddess across the board in long, sweeping letters.

I said to Elaine who then smiled. "Of course it should. I think I still know the way, I can show you there," she said and led me towards the garden of roses. When we got there, I discovered that half of it was gone, unlike how it was years back. Did they clear it? Frowning, I plucked out one out of the ones I could find and inhaled the scent. It made me feel more alive and I couldn't help but nod my head in satisfaction. No one knew what this flower did to my entire body system aside from me and my wolf.

​The Descent into the Abyss ​They didn't take the whole fleet. Kael, Nora, and Elia boarded a "Leaf-Skiff"—a small, aerodynamic vessel grown from the Weaver’s own branch-matter. As they plummeted into the depths of the canyon, the red dust of Mars began to coat the glass, turning the world into a blur of rusted light. ​At the very floor of the rift, they found the Mars-Vault. It was a massive, subterranean dome carved from the hematite-rich rock. Unlike the organic, weeping roots of the Mother-Root on Earth, this entrance was a masterpiece of Sterling geometry.

Below, in a courtyard garden, Mars was laughing with Anya, a simple smile on his face. "Ahh... I am strangely annoyed," he muttered to the empty room, the feeling a hot and unfamiliar within him. In the courtyard, Anya, Mars' first friend in this world, was eager to hear more about the tales Mars told her. “What else do you have in your world?” She asked,while she deftly pruned a rose bush beside Mars.

across the 140 million miles of void. For a single, staggering minute, the three thousand Martians in the Valles Marineris tubes felt the "Heartbeat" of the Earth. They felt the "Labor" of Detroit, the "Grace" of the Pearl-Spires, and the "Cold-Standard" of the falling violet rain. They felt the "Complexity" that their "Clean-Slate" protocol was designed to erase. The "Solar-Mirrors" de-activated. The "predatory sun" in the sky faded back into a cluster of harmless, silver dots.

As if on cue there is a tap on the door again. The Gamma gets up to answer the door. I can scent him before I see him. My second chance mate is entering the room. “No! Nope! Not happening!” I yell across the room trying to get out of the bed so I can run. My feet get tangled in the bedsheets and I end up in a painful mess on the floor. Both the Gamma and my mate run over to me and help me up. I can feel the sparks bouncing across my skin and I feel a sense of doom rolling over me. All I have ever wanted was those sparks and for someone to want me for me.

We didn’t do anything. Titan- Won’t she feel it? I mean, there was no rejection. Mars- There was no accepting either. She would rather believe lies than the truth. Moving on. Titan- I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Mars goes quiet as Titan focuses on pack affairs. He tries not to think about his mate. He held her once and she was gone. He didn’t even get to know her name. The moment he gave her his name, she pulled away and ran. Titan had been stunned by her speed. Mars was pretty fast, but she was gone in a flash.

"It was at Colton's party last night. Oh my god, Athena, he is hot! He's the one for me, and we marked each other immediately." I felt my stomach harden. I was happy for Mia, but sadness overwhelmed me. Her life was so simple. She had found her mate, even without knowing his character, and they had marked each other. But here I was, unable to mark Cameron because I was a bloody witch, and I would destroy his life if I did. Nobody could blame me for being a little envious. "Congratulations, my love. I'm so happy for you," I said, biting my lower lip to keep it from trembling.
