I’ll get to be free. But tonight, I’m just a boy sitting in a cold corner holding a burned book with shaky hands and hoping my mother never comes home. Because monsters don’t always live under your bed. Sometimes, they give birth to you. But, like always, God didn’t hear me. He never does. The sharp, blaring sound of the doorbell echoes through the silence, slicing through the fragile peace like a knife. My body freezes for a second, my breath catching in my throat. She’s back.

I CHECKED OVER THE list that Auth had given me of this week's tasks, making sure I had done all of them. I had just finished returning a monster to its book after it had escaped. Usually, something like that wouldn’t be my priority; however, the monster had somehow managed to get into another book. It had caused some damage to the book and nearly killed one of the main characters while it was there. Having failed to find the monster before it was seen, it was now in the book. It was a good thing I wasn’t seen, otherwise Auth couldn’t have written it off since I don’t exactly fit the theme of the book.

"You ungrateful little bitch! We never should have brought you back! You were a curse from the day you were born! A cold, emotionless monster!" There it was. The truth they’d painted over with family photos and forced dinners. A monster. Maybe he was right. "Finally, something we agree on," I said, my voice eerily pleasant. I slammed my palm down on the cheap IKEA coffee table between us. "I am a monster. And monsters eat their young. Get out. Now." The sound wasn't a slam. It was a crack. A spiderweb of fractures erupted from under my hand, racing across the laminated surface. Then, with a groan of surrendering particleboard, the entire table collapsed into a heap of splinters and shame.

So no one should be able to approach me . Before my fingers even reached it, the book opened by itself. Just like it always used to whenever a new page filled up. My chest tightened. The page was blank for two seconds. Then words began to form. Like invisible ink deciding to show itself. {Your vampire side is not dead son.} I swallowed. {I believe you assumed it died but it is not.} My fingers curled into fists. {Your inner monster is in a deep slumber.} My breath grew heavier. {Use your fire to bring it back to life.}

She organized them all into a file and placed it in my hands. "This is everything. I'm not hiding anything from you. You can see who I am through these memories and decide for yourself if I'm a good person or not. I want to adopt you. I want to be your mother. But if you don't want that, it's okay…" I looked at the scars covering her head, and it felt like my chest was stuffed with something heavy, making it hard to breathe. Memory extraction was completely random. To pull out everything like that… I couldn't even imagine how much she had suffered.

I fed on their satisfaction. Taking deep breaths, I counted backwards. The foggy shower disappeared behind my lids as I closed my eyes. Monsters... Thousands of them.... Inside me, breathing in me, feeding my conscience. Or were they feeding on them? But they were my inner guardian angel, my inner protector. These monsters made me the vigilant and feared man I was today. They made me believe that it was better not to believe. So, I paid heed to them. Opening my eyes, I stared at the mirror gloomily.

Even when he struggled all his life to know the answer to the question of what made him different from others, why he was different and who he actually was, he never expected an answer so disappointing. He always thought something was very wrong with him and there was a demon inside him that controlled him and his actions but hearing that he was a werewolf was not what he wanted to hear.
