They were the most wonderful yet unserious parents anyone could ever ask for. "Hold on, I gotta call your uncle Henry," Dad whipped out his phone, his face bubbling with excitement. "He's not gonna believe this. I finally have something to complain about my kids. No one takes me seriously when all I nag about is that you're too perfect." Yup, very unserious- "OhmyGod, Henry! Can you believe this? Damian is gay! My own son! It feels like someone stabbed me right in the chest! Ugh!" he turned to us, "Bye, love ya! We should meet at the bar."

I immediately hear them start a serious discussion about me, doesn't even wait to make sure I am gone. "He acts incredibly calm for a king that plans to sacrifice his life to save those of his people." Mother comments, trying to sound proud but her voice comes out strained with emotional pain. "Sometimes true heroes are the ones that smile through silent pain, cry behind closed doors and fight battles no one knows about." I hear Griffin reply, sounding honestly proud. "Yes, our son is inhumanly perfect, he is unlike me in every way." My father painfully mutters. I walk away to spare my ears from his raving. He kind of loves ranting about his mistakes and I am tired of listening.

The sound of the running water was the only noise in the room. "It was a miracle today, Julian," Evans said, his voice as calm and professional as it had been during the birth. He didn't turn around. "A son. A legacy. You must be very proud." "I am," Julian said, stopping three feet behind the doctor. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't need one. "I am especially proud of my son Leo. He has a habit of finding ghosts in my machines." The water stopped. The silence that followed was heavy, thick with the scent of antiseptic and impending violence. Dr. Evans turned slowly, drying his hands on a paper towel. His kind, grandfatherly face didn't change, but his eyes were suddenly as cold as Julian’

His heart had turned merciless. "Do you really not understand?" Mr. Marcus asked in a deep voice. His son was too smart, and too mature for his age. The way they interacted had always been like friends, he had never had such a serious conversation with Henry before, nor had he ever been angry with him. His son was too perfect. The sight of another man touching his daughter—no matter how lovingly—was something he wasn’t sure he’d ever get used to. Over and over, he repeated in his head: 'He is your son-in-law. He is the man your daughter loves.' Beside him, Valerie could see the storm brewing inside him. She placed a gentle hand on his arm. "Marcus, my love… Breathe. That boy is the man our daughter chose. He settles again almost instantly, trusting completely. I sat back and watched him for a long time after that. Tomorrow will begin something new, single father, widower in all but truth, a life I never wanted and never chose. But tonight, none of that exists. Tonight, there is only my son, my perfect little boy, and the man I still love with every piece of me, wherever he is. "I love you, Shen," I whisper into the darkness, and the words are for both of them. "For both of my Shens. Wherever you are, whatever you remember or don't remember, I love you. And our son is perfect. Absolutely perfect."
