When breakfast was finally served, I pushed my food around my plate until the fairy eyed me suspiciously. “Why the long face?” she asked, slapping a spoonful of jam onto her own pancake. “The living book isn't helping,” I admitted. “I ask, it answers, but it makes no sense.” She tilted her head, then shrugged. “Well, you do know the book can take you back in time, don’t you?” I blinked. “What?” Her eyes twinkled as she chewed. “Mhm. We don’t have one here, but everyone in the magical circles knows about the living book. It carries timelines. It doesn’t just answer, it remembers.”

Brooklyn said, sitting at the table where her laptop and notebook sat. Kendall pulled out a chair and sat down. “What’s up?” Brooklyn asked, shutting her laptop. “I did a reading today,” Kendall said, taking out her notebook, “and it’s got me a little worried.” Frowning, Brooklyn said, “What did the cards say?” Opening her notebook, Kendall looked at her notes. “It’s saying something about heartbreak, danger, and loss,” she said. Shea paused in her chopping to say, “That doesn’t sound good.”

Whatever they were doing in there—whether it was work or something else—I couldn't care less anymore. I went into the spare bedroom, grabbed the old hiking backpack I used to use, and packed a few things inside. They still hadn't come out by the time I was ready to leave. Only some faint noise could be heard through the crack in the study door.
