Panic started to claw its way up her throat. She reached out with her chained hands, feeling around in the darkness. Her fingers met metal on all sides. She was trapped inside a metal box, barely big enough for her to kneel in, let alone stand. The walls were smooth and cold, offering no grip, no weakness she could exploit. Her breathing came faster now, shallow and quick. The box felt like it was shrinking around her, pressing in from all sides. She forced herself to calm down, to think clearly despite the fear threatening to overwhelm her.

The metallic tang of blood filled the freezing warehouse, thick and suffocating. I took off a toe, the guy screamed, and the sound bounced off the high corrugated ceiling like a gunshot. Nyla tried to stop me, her hand gripping my bicep with a strength that surprised me, but I couldn't pull back. I didn't want to. My vision was clouded with the memory of the company lobby turning into a wall of orange fire.
