A vampire bites a human to get their venom in their system, then they are killed. Once they have the vampire venom in their system, they will wake up, not quite dead but not quite alive either. Then, they must feed, which completes the change.

My senses sharpened gradually, and as my consciousness fully returned, I became acutely aware of subtle changes in his body. As I kept thinking back over what I had done, stillness descended among us. Though it appears fascinating, the world of the vampires felt too fantastical to me. Is this the basis for their interest in vampires? The thing that astonished me the most was their method for turning a mortal into a vampire: they bite that particular mortal on their neck, and the vampires would force that mortal to drink their own blood once they have bitten them.
