Sun Tzu had lived and died long before men like Nikolai De Luca ever learned to call themselves kings, but strategy never aged. Power never changed. Only the pieces on the board did. I liked ancient warfare texts. They were honest. They didn’t pretend victory came from morality or mercy. Humans and supernatural alike flee from the chaos. The whole world is on fire. Without a human authority to regulate us, I started claiming vast amounts of land - land that in the past belonged to my family anyway - and started to build, expand, silently creating the biggest, most dangerous mixed pack the world has ever seen.

He moved differently this time, more certain, as though yesterday’s visit had already decided today’s. I watched from the counter as his fingers settled on a thick volume: Underground Wars. Interesting. First, unmasking. Then, walking through the dark. Now, the hidden battles beneath it all. His preferences were drawing a map. Not of fiction, not of leisure, but of intent. He carried the book to his usual corner, settled into the chair, and began reading like the rest of the world didn’t matter. Glasses slipping down his nose, posture harmless. Harmless was a costume. The majority of the books were about werewolves and the pack’s history. There were also books about politics, war, and governance. I would have loved to pick up the book that contained information on all members of the Crescent Moon Pack, but I decided against it. It would seem like snooping. I finally settled on a book titled ‘The Art of War.’ Not that I was a fan of violence but I was curious to know why the author had referred to war as an art. It was such a controversial claim.
