Vera Stanhope Books Novels & Stories

Was Vera truly standing up for her? “I see,” Stephanie said slowly, each word deliberate as she moved to stand directly across from Vera’s desk. “So now you’re on Ava’s side. Why, Vera? Trying to win her favor? Or is this about getting closer to Zachary Gonzalez?” Vera stiffened. Her eyes flicked away from Stephanie’s icy stare, her jaw tightening. Truthfully, she didn’t even understand why she’d defended Ava. But she knew one thing for certain, it wasn’t to gain Ava’s favor, and definitely not to meet Zac.

He always had a way of hiding all his crimes including the dead body of the pregnant girl he killed when I was little. I drank the water that the maid provided. Beside me, Valerie still comforted me. Vera came suddenly because she wanted to grab some snacks. She cleared her throat and couldn't stand the attention her sister gave me. "Aren't you afraid she will steal Hugo from you?" Valerie turned to Vera quickly. “Watch your mouth, Vera! Estelle became a Stealer not because of her will!” Vera walked arrogantly while shrugging her shoulders. "Yeah, let's see if you still say that."

“I’m sorry to disturb you, Veronica, but Sasha said that you might like a cup of coffee.” Forcing a welcoming smile to her lips, Veronica took the tray from Sasha’s housekeeper. She had been working in the library all morning, painstakingly going through the accounts and costings for the work she had already commissioned for Elsinore Hall. She knew she had to leave everything in perfect order for whoever was going to take her place. But now, even though she hadn’t eaten any breakfast and she knew that she ought to be hungry, the only hunger she had was the neverending, consuming hunger for Sasha’s love. And, as he had made more than plain to her, that was something she could never have.

The door was closed and I could see light coming from underneath it. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Vera was sitting on the bed, propped up against some pillows. She had a book in her hands and seemed completely focused on reading it. "You're back," Vera said without looking up from her book. I didn't respond. I just closed the door behind me and started walking toward the bathroom. "Luan," Vera said, finally looking up. "I said you're back." I still didn't say anything. I just kept walking, unbuttoning my shirt as I went.

Isabel sat on the bed staring at Vera. Her mouth fell open. She could not believe who was standing there. Vera’s smile dropped fast. Her face twisted with rage. She took two steps forward and started yelling. “You keep ruining everything no matter what!” Vera screamed. “No matter what I plan, no matter how hard I try, you just keep showing up and messing it all up. I thought you were gone for good and here you are again like some stupid ghost that will not die.”

Instead, she maintained her haughty posture, taking a half-step forward and raising a confident eyebrow. "Want to know the truth about what happened that night?" Vera purred. "Just take me to the Goldcrest Kingdom with you. I will tell you everything I know. Sounds like a fair deal, doesn't it?" Just as I thought. I scoffed, looking at her like she was filth. "Do you think I am stupid enough to agree to your demands over a pathetic lie?" Seeing my completely unmoved reaction, Vera panicked. Gritting her teeth, she frantically tried to prove she wasn't making it up.

The morning was around us and the estate was in front of us and inside it the library had Margaret's documentation on the table and all of us trying to understand the shape of a woman who had been dead for forty years and kept showing us new dimensions. I got out of the car. Hazel got out. We went inside. Vera was in the entrance hall. She looked at us. She knew something had changed again. "Come back to the library," she said. We went. We sat down. I told her what Sable had said. She listened without moving and when I finished she looked at the folder on the table for a long moment. "She facilitated it herself," Vera said. "Yes," I said. "It was insurance," Vera said.

Vera shook her head as if she could read my mind as she took a step towards me and grabbed my hand in hers. "No, no, I can see what you are thinking, my prince, but I don't want to live if it is without you. Yes, I want all of us to be safe and alive, but no, I don't want to go back to how my life once was. Cold and empty, mostly, except for these people," she whispered as she leaned closer to me, her eyes staring straight into mine and, for a second, I couldn't even breathe. Her violet verbena eyes were so intense I felt like I would drown inside her. I wouldn't mind, though.

Vera appeared at the door. She wore black, her face pale as frost, her dead mate’s wolf crest pinned to her chest. The moment she walked in, several elders turned toward her with sympathy. Someone whispered, “Lady Vera still came tonight. She must be trying so hard.” Vera stopped in front of us and gave me a soft smile. “So this is Miss Hale,I’ve heard so much about you.” Kaelan glanced at her. “Vera, you should sit down if you’re tired.”
