Game of Hearts
Ring!!
Ring !!
Ring!!
The phone wouldn’t stop ringing…
Kai picked it up, eyes scanning the screen, jaw locked so tight a muscle jumped in his cheek. The assistant swallowed hard and tried to lean back, but there was nowhere to go.
“Who sent this?” Kai asked.
“I—I don’t know.”
“Try again.”
“I swear, I just forward things sometimes. I don’t ask questions.”
Zara’s stomach turned. “Forward things from who?”
Before the assistant could answer, footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. Kai’s head snapped toward the door. In one smooth movement, he slipped the phone into his pocket, grabbed Zara’s wrist, and pulled her back just as the door handle turned.
