CHASING MONSTERS
Shiloh said gently, “you can eat as much as you want. You don’t need to hide it.”
“I’m saving it,” he whispered, “for my brother and sister.”
Sophie inhaled sharply.
“Where are they?” she asked.
He swallowed. “This way.”
He led them through a narrow alley to a half-collapsed doorway. Two smaller pups, one girl, one boy,huddled together inside. Both were rail-thin. The girl’s eyes were sharp with fear and distrust; the little boy’s eyes were dull from hunger.
Shiloh’s vision blurred for a moment as memories crashed through her, cold nights, empty stomach, every stranger a possible danger. Survivors raised by claws, not comfort.
