Despite it still being afternoon, the sky above was swallowed by thick, swirling clouds, casting an eerie darkness over the land. Snowflakes fell relentlessly, coating the ground in an untouched white blanket, while skeletal branches, heavy with ice, loomed over us like silent sentinels. A bitter wind howled through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and frost, chilling me to the bone.

The narrow road twisted through cliffs crusted in ice and snow, bordered by dense evergreen forests that seemed untouched by time. The trees stood tall and ancient, their limbs heavy with frost, like silent sentinels bearing witness to everything we were about to walk into. I caught glimpses of ravens darting between branches and the occasional glint of water far below—rivers frozen in motion, glassed over with winter’s hold.

Victoria’s wolf, dusky brown and nimble, moved beside Calix’s steel-colored form, all muscle and silence. They gathered their packs in their jaws and braved the snow. At first, the wind stung. The snow whipped into their fur, cold and blinding, coating their lashes and muzzles. But they pressed on. The forest loomed ahead, tall pines and ancient oaks, their snow-laden branches arching over the path like guardians. As they entered the woods, the storm dulled. The trees muffled the wind, and though the snow still fell, it wasn’t blinding. It became… beautiful. A world of white and grey, quiet and vast.

The Solstice celebration raged on in the distance, the manor’s lights flickering like stars against the night sky, the music and laughter carrying faintly on the wind. But I was far from it. I wandered the forest for the entire night, my body still aching from the fight, my mind a storm of guilt and hunger I couldn’t silence.
