“And she lives” Those were the first words that rolled out of Sebastian’s mother’s lips once Sebastian pushed me in through the door and let it slam behind him. I winced at the sound as I looked around. His parents and sister’s faces held no love, not even a hint of affection. In fact, they just looked like they’d seen better days. They made it clear as usual that I wasn't welcome and I didn't want to be. “Very generous of you, Mother” Sebastian’s voice reeked of sarcasm as he leaned down with a sneer. “You really think I would give up my wife?” I cringed away from his sneer. “Sebastian…” I tried to reach out for his hand but he moved his body away from mine, so I gave up and slumped my hands against my sides instead. The room was so cold I could see my breath as his mother continued, “You might have had your pick of the women in town. But then, I suppose, there’s always one who isn’t worthy of being yours.” Sebastian stood still for a moment before saying, in a very low tone, “Don’t talk about her like that. She deserves a lot more respect and she's been through a lot already.” “I would care even if she died” Sebastian’s sister added and I felt an overwhelming desire to go hide. “Says the alcoholic” I retorted. I thought I had said it in my head but with the way everyone froze, it was obvious that wasn't what I had done . It took a long time for his mother to respond, “Excuse me?” But Sebastian was already pushing me towards the stairs. He lifted me off the wheel and carried me in bridal style upstairs, setting me down only when we got to our room. “Our” it felt almost lovely rolling down my tongue. “Just wait here.” He muttered and disappeared downstairs. I waited. Did I have a choice? He returned shortly after, and this time he was with my wheel chair. “Don't let my parents get to you, we will be out of here before you know it” Sebastian assured me as he sat himself down beside me. “I know. Can I talk to Clara?” My heart skipped a beat with worry as I thought over how much Clara must be putting in and how worried she must have been. “No, Alina. We are only going to focus on you getting better. Work can come later” He explained with a look that meant there'd be no room for argument. My eyes dropped to my lap. “Okay.” I mumbled The best decision I made was to leave that hospital. My mental state adjusted well enough by then that I knew exactly where I wanted to go now. The voices in my head also seemed to agree and it felt good for them to quiet. They weren't bothering me so much anymore. And finally, Sebastian and I moved. This new space was bigger. Quieter. Kinder. Away from the wrath of Sebastian’s parents. Sebastian started teaching me how to use the wheelchair so I wouldn't end up in front of a door, bumping into walls. I loved this new place and every day was a fresh start for me. But there was a nagging in my heart, my job, my grandfather, Victor. Everywhere I looked, my mind flashed back to Victor . Back to the way he looked as I stood reeking of fear. It was like his image was imprinted on the inside of my eyelids whenever I closed my eyes. I couldn’t stop watching it. I tried everything I could think of to forget, but nothing worked. Something happened during the weekend when Sebastian took me to eat. There was a man sat away from us, he looked to be in his late thirties or early forties but there was something about him that seemed old, ancient, tired, and drained. I had seen him watching us- not us rather, watching Sebastian . His eyes were boring into Sebastian’s who had his back turned toward this man and when he caught me watching him, he smiled. It was a weird smile that felt very familiar to me. But I couldn't quite put my finger on why. It was new yet old at the same time. There was something about it that made me uneasy and the hairs on my arms rose in response to its presence. I looked away shivering. “Are you cold?” Sebastian asked as he took notice of my unease. “Not really.” I shrugged. “Are you alright?” He looked concerned for a split second before I nodded and he smiled back. I leaned in closely, I don't know why I did it but it felt like an irresistible urge “Do you know that man” I whispered in his ear “The one staring at us?” I didn't know if I had actually heard anything in my head or just imagined it. But I hoped it was real. Sebastian looked over in the direction that I secretly motioned in “No” He didn't even stare at the man for long . That bothered me. “Why do you ask?” Before I could answer, the man had stood and walked away. “I don't know, I just thought there was something strangely familiar about him” I admitted. Maybe it was a little weird to compare someone who had never given me any type of reaction to someone who had stared at me with intense intensity earlier, but it was probably just my imagination. That night when we got back home, I let my mind wander from the events from that day while Sebastian made dinner, wondering if the man who had watched me earlier was the reason I felt uncomfortable. I had been thinking about him since then though, even more than usual. At night, I had nightmares of being chased down the sidewalk, being beaten, crying. Screaming. It sounded like it was coming from some kind of movie. Not real life. In those dreams, I always woke up screaming, covered in sweat and covered in blood. I felt like I was in physical pain, I wanted to cry. The dreams scared me, terrified me.Alina’s POV “You can't be here ma'am” Clara voice was low as she whispered to me , though her eyes were soft when I glanced at them but she kept looking around as if she didn't want to get caught talking to me, which would be a complete and utter lie because we were friends right? “You haven't been responding to my messages or answering my calls.” I looked at the clock in the reception area of the waiting room.“She took my phone, she didn't let me get home until past 10, she has been strict with us since the past one week.” She started rubbing her hand over her face. “I don't know what to do anymore. ” I could hear the frustration in her voice. I knew it wasn't easy for her to deal with.“Let me see her.”Clara looked like she was skeptical about my request . But then she sighed and gestured for me to follow her up the hallway. We stopped in front of a plain wooden door with the name 'Vanessa Grant’' in gold letters on its surface. A small plaque above the frame read 'CEO'. She

Alina’s POV“What if it was him?” that voice echoed in my mind, causing me to look up and look around me, I was alone and lost in my thoughts.I shivered involuntarily.I didn't understand where that question even came from. But the voices in my head were active. “Alina, are you even listening to me?” One snapped, pulling further into my thoughts.“Who?” I asked, confused. I knew who it asked for, and I knew what it was talking about but trust me when I say no one wanted their fears to be confirmed.“That’s what I was wondering” another sighed. “What if it was ” it repeated its question. I could imagine the voice as that of a lean woman, staring at me with crossed her arms and warm amber eyes piercing through the bottom of my soul and trying to figure me out but I looked away immediately. The hair in my arms stood involuntarily at the mention of his name, causing my whole body to tense up. I remembered the last time. I was giving him more power than necessary. He still managed to b
Sebastian’s POV “What is this madness?” One of the men yelled, he was staring at me with cold icy eyes, and his accent was heavy.“What does it look like? Be patient and watch.” I responded calmly, although I really wanted to tear them into pieces. When the video finished playing, they both turned to me, faces white as paper, their mouths agape. I could have sworn that their hearts skipped a few beats when the video played the first time. Then one of them looked at the other, he gave him a slight nod as if he had just completed some kind of mission. The one called Pierre cleared his voice. “What do you want?”he asked. He didn't seem so confident now. In fact he seemed downright scared. But what was there to be afraid of, he thought. I’m not going to kill you or anything, so calm down. Calm down.“Well, first of all, you need to answer a question for me” A smirk appeared on my face. The man looked surprised but nodded in agreement. “Did you really think you could get away with hara
Sebastian’s POV “The French men, they molested me” The words fell off her lips and I could feel the blood rushing to my face, though there was no emotion on her face. This was a mistake, I must have misheard. It couldnt be possible. All I saw was red. I was angry and sad and confused and scared. I couldn't remember why I had felt these things, but I remembered those words very cleary. Those words were engraved into my mind, they found a way to keep themselves in my memory. It played on a loop in my mind, the image of her lying broken and bleeding on the floor, the smell of her fear in my nostrils, her broken soul. It felt like I could remember her, more like sew every single detail, the sound of her screams, and every single word she screamed. The way her eyes were wide open and full of fear as she tried to call for me, I'd always hear it echoing in my mind. I could picture the men laughing while they tossed her back and forth, I could imagine them staring at her luscious body,
Alina’s POV My vision blurred when I woke up and blinked away the dark spots in front of my eyes, trying to understand where I was, what happened. My body felt tense like a rubber band pulled taut as it stretched from my shoulders to my knees, but when I tried to move any muscle in my body it just hurt. It was like there were wires connected to all my limbs, some in my back, others in my legs and feet. It made it hard for me to sit up, so I had to lean against the bed.“Relax…” I heard a familiar voice. “Just relax. You're fine.""Mister?" I croaked out, my voice sounding raw even to my own ears. He laughed.“From Sebastian to Mister, but I will take it” he said. His voice sounded distant, like I was listening through a tunnel. “You're safe here, we're going to get you out of that position in a few minutes, just let your muscles uncoil." His warm hand rested lightly on my shoulder. “I feel trapped.”"It's okay...you're not trapped." I could hear the smile in his voice. “You ju
AlinaThe pain was immediate and excruciating but I kept myself together. I didn't cry, I didn't move, I didn't react. Not for long anyway. It was a good thing that I had learned self-control. “Mother!” Sebastian yelled angrily. He walked up to his mother and pulled her away from me. “Now you lis

Alina POV“Sir your fiancee is here” I heard his receptionist say from behind the door.Sebastian didn't make any attempt to move so I pushed him. What surprised me was the way my hands tingled as I pushed him further away and the fact that he did not object. We stared at each other for a moment
AlinaPanic engulfed me as I stared at the moving body, there was no way I was going to be part of a murder case, not when I had just started living, not with everything else.“What the hell have you done?
