It was like a challenge, and I couldn't resist responding like always. Dear max, Today's a little different; I didn't know whether to write to you or not. It's my 13th birthday next Friday, and I have spent the last 2 years battling with the emotions of not really celebrating it. My parents are shockers and left me and my sister when I was only 10 years old. Well, I'm almost 11, and I just felt like today I wanted to write something that didn't make it about hating you.

"Well, I just want to try and adapt in another part of the world, I've lived in America all my life" "And your parent allowed that? " "Yeah, I'm eighteen, I'm old enough to make my own decisions" 'I'm eighteen, I'm old enough to make my own decisions" I mimicked and he burst into laughter "How old are you? You look sixteen" "That's what everyone says, I'm seventeen but I'll be eighteen in three weeks" I replied "So any plans for your birthday " "Errr... Nope, I don't like celebrating birthdays, I find it childish " I lied

**** Lara**** A week later was my 18th birthday and for the first time in a long time, I decided to celebrate. Finally, I was legally an adult and fully independent. The thought was both thrilling and a tad disconcerting. I pushed my loneliness aside and focused on how best to celebrate.

I recognized them, they were friends with Jake, we were all the same age more or less, Jake was eighteen years old and so were they, I was yet to turn eighteen which was merely a few months away, not that this held any real importance to me however, I could remember my birthday month, but not the actual day. My mom had always told me how I was born in May, she called it the most beautiful month. Thinking of this made me feel both happy and sad.

My fingers trembled slightly as I touched the cold marble, the air around me heavy and still. “Lilian Vale. Date of birth, 20th September 1999. Date of death, 10th March 2009.” I forced back a tear. “Hi, Lily. I brought your favorite flowers. I still can’t believe you’re gone. You’d have been twenty-six today.” My voice cracked, but I kept going. “It’s your birthday, Lily.”

LUCY. Tomorrow was supposed to be a happy day, but my heart felt heavy the moment I woke up today. I will be twenty-one, and I have no idea how I will celebrate it. I told Adan I didn’t want a big party, but I’m starting to regret it. I had never celebrated my birthdays since my parents died, and the two years I spent in the orphanage didn’t make up for it as I gave them a false date of birth. So I never get any cakes and birthday wishes anymore on my real birthday.

It is giving me a hard time. “You are born in October, the year 1996 the 11th of the month. We- we celebrated your debut… the only thing that is missing that time is… is the debutant. You- you are not there to be seen by the world.” He said and his face turns so gloomy. “My written birthdate is on November 10, 1997. We didn’t celebrate my debut and not even my birthday.” I said as I try to divert his attention away from me.

I muttered, earning a tired laugh from her. “Livana Isole Liveshade,” she said, using my full name now. “It’s your last day of school and your birthday. You are going.” Birthday. The thought pushed through the fog in my head. Eighteen. The age where everything was supposed to make sense, the age you met your mate, and the age people stopped looking at you like you were unfinished. I wanted all of that. Nothing dramatic. Nothing complicated. Just something normal. But thinking about it this early in the morning felt exhausting, so I rolled over again.

Who would believe me if I said that I have only celebrated one birthday my whole life which I couldn't remember since I was just a year old. The only thing that made me aware of my one year old birthday was the photos taken. And yes. I, Jasmine Harp, am twenty two years old. All my birthdays seemed like normal days to me. I didn't celebrate my freaky fifteen, not even the special sweet sixteen, let alone my big one-eight or my twentieth birthday.
