The title sent shivers through me: 'Dark Powers, Secrets of the Werewolves'. I opened the book, and a strange glow emanated from the pages. I felt a sudden jolt, like a surge of electricity had passed through me. The room began to spin, and I fell to the ground, the book slipping from my grasp. As I struggled to get up, I heard the old woman's voice, urgent and worried. 'Ryker! Ryker, what's wrong?' She rushed into the room, her eyes scanning me frantically. Then her gaze fell upon the book, and her expression changed to one of alarm. 'Oh, no. You shouldn't have touched that.'

“I can’t… I can’t see. It’s too dark. It’s just like the closet. Just like when I was little.” Eli started crying for real now. “Let me out! Please let me out of here! Cove! Anybody!” He crawled to the middle of the bed and hugged a pillow tight against his chest. “Somebody help me… I don’t want to be alone in the dark. Please. I’ll be good. I’ll do whatever you want. Just turn on the lights.” His breathing turned into short, desperate sobs. “I’m scared. I’m so scared. Make it stop. Make the dark go away.”

I swallowed hard at the thought. Suddenly, a cold wind rushed through the room. One by one, the candles winked out. Puff. Puff. Puff. The darkness became absolute. I couldn't even see my own hands in front of my face. I felt completely alone. Everywhere was charcoal black. It felt alive, moving around me. "I... I can't see you," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "It’s too dark. I can't see anything." My voice trembled.

Their footsteps trailed off. I lay there, my gaze fixed on the ceiling as the pain grew and my sanity started to crumble. I wanted to scream, to beg him for the drugs, to go back to that stupid, numb peace I once knew. However, I could not. The door swung open. Francis walked in, the small silver bottle glinting in his hand. He looked worn out: dark circles under his eyes and a rough stubble on his chin. He sat down beside me, watching as I writhed in agony.

Damon's POV I was staring at the book lying on the floor, its leather cover was already cracking from the spine given how often I’d gripped it. It looked so harmless sitting there, but every page seemed like a wound. Every line was my darkness. I had written it in the quiet hours when sleep refused to come, when my thoughts were louder than my heartbeat, when I wished for the kind of silence that only death could give. All of it, my despair, my loneliness, my longing to disappear, was right there, in black ink. And now Sabrina had seen it.

Instead, his right-hand reaches to the top of one of the bookshelves. The top shelves are home to books that have not been
