There would be no room for self-doubt. Discovering that I’m a good healer started after my teenage years. The first person I have proven my ability to was my father. Being a Beta, he always went to fight and hunt. And when father told everyone my ability, no one believed him or even wanted to be treated by me. My goal was to help, but they saw it as a threat. Two hours had passed and still Donna hadn’t gone back. I kept peeking through the window, but all I could see was how everyone was busy, happily arranging the place for the celebration of Samuel’s second marriage with Alice.

The healer’s hands moved deftly, crushing roots into paste, stirring leaves into boiling water that smelled bitter and foul.

He was still hyper and sharp, but a little more calmer than before. “You’ve changed,” I said quietly my tone soft. “So have you,” she shot back instantly, eyes flicking to my chest like she could see straight through me. I stiffened. She noticed. Rhea leaned back on her palms. “Okay. But before we get to… whatever that was, you’re not dodging my questions. Start talking.” I sighed. “You first. Healer program. What did they do to you? Give me the full gists..” Rhea left for a healers program a few months ago to pursue her ambition of becoming full on healer of the pack.

She can help you cope with your emotions and ensure a healthy pregnancy." I felt a lump form in my throat as I heard the beta's words. No one had ever offered to help me like that before. I had always been on my own, fighting to survive. I looked up at the beta, searching for any sign of ulterior motives. But all I saw was kindness and concern in his eyes.

He didn’t think so. There was something else going on. He just couldn’t tell what. Either the moon goddess had some big plans for him and Dhara or she was merely getting a kick out of his pathetic circumstances. Pathetic because the one woman he and his wolf agreed upon—wanted nothing more than to just claim her—was neither their mate nor someone they could mark. Healers were never known to be mated to anyone. They lived a solitary life. They were powerful but they were alone. It was just hard to say if that was a curse or a blessing.

Each breath was still a struggle, coming out in short, painful gasps. "I was... trying to help," I whispered to no one in particular. "Help?" the mother's voice cut through the crowd. "You call murdering my daughter help?" "I am... I am a healer," I gasped weakly. "I save... I save people..." "You are nothing but a cursed monster," she spat back. "Just like your mate."
