Rene’s POV The rain beat hard against my bedroom window. I looked over at my empty bed, rubbing the cool emptiness. If Nathan were there, he’d wrap his long legs around me, as he embraced her. “Don’t worry, beautiful. We have to have a little rain if we want the flowers,” he’d always say. I thought about calling Lisa, but changed my mind when I looked at the time on my phone. It was nearly 3 a.m. I turned on the lamp on my nightstand and reached for the remote. After a few times scrolling through the channels, I couldn’t find anything to watch that interested me. I looked at my phone and, without thinking, decided to FaceTime the one person who i thought could be up.

I then head to the pool where I have a cocktail to unwind before I head up to bed at eleven. Everything in my life, personal and professional, runs according to a very strict schedule and set of routines. I can set my clock to it. Tonight, however, I allow Mara to tell Gregory his story while I stand outside his bedroom and shamelessly listen it. It’s a story about a young man who has to go on a series of adventures to save his family from an evil witch. I smile. The story might be a little too grown up for Gregory to fully understand, but Mara is inexperienced, and Greg is transfixed.

When I finally crawled into bed, the ceiling looked the same as always, but it felt different now. Like he was up there, still awake, maybe listening for me this time. I turned off the light. Rolled over. And whispered to the ceiling again. “Goodnight, Mr. Ceiling.” Somewhere above me, I swore I heard a low laugh. The next night, 2 a.m. came and went in silence. No thuds. No creaks. No teasing sounds through the wall. Just silence. And somehow… that was worse. I lay awake, eyes open in the dark, waiting for something — anything.

"Did you hear about the Midnight Cowboy!?" "I heard that he—" "—my cousin Delores said—" "—he's SO dreamy, like—" "—I heard he kills people—" "—pero, better than—" "Veronica…Veronica…? HEY Ronnie!" "I'm awake!" My eyes are blurry, tracking the streaming neon lights of Nines. I must have fallen asleep after my shift at Open Palms Retirement Home.

Before my head started to spin, I chuckled like a maniac and somehow found a way to the outside. It was almost past might night, the wind was cold, and it was hitting my face with different shreds. I let go of my sandals and walked bare legs. I reached over a bridge from where I could see the sky full of stars, which felt close to nature. I wish I could go to the mountains and explore life there more. It was a momentous feeling when I found myself shivering. The sky suddenly became draped with stars, and the night went silent. The moon was all high; it was a full moon, and it was looking lovely, but it made me tense somehow. I remember my grandma telling stories about werewolves and Dracula

"And I tell them stories." "What kind of stories?" Herb said. This was the part that had gotten him out of bed early on a Saturday morning (his only day off from selling mattresses the rest of the week) to come over here. Willie had mentioned stories when Herb got after him for being late coming home so often. It seemed they made quite an impression on the kid, but when Herb asked what kind of stories they were Willie clammed up. The Brookwood woman shrugged. "You know: ghost stories. The kind children like. Mostly ones my grandmother told me when this was her home. I could tell you one, if you like? So you'll see that they're not so bad."

It is not a long story so I will quickly tell you. It was a very sunny day but Bia had chosen to read the book again instead of playing outside. And as you know, when she saw the world "treasure" her curiosity made her read all the rules very carefully. When she finished she first thought that the last rule was written by her own father, because he could not open one eye after 9pm. But most important for her was the last forbition. To explain it we have to go a bit outside and a bit in the past.

CHAPTER 1: DRAGONS It is a little past 8pm and the moon is full and well lit. It is bedtime for seven years old Elizabeth and she is all ready for bed. Teeth flossed, hair brushed and nighties worn. Her sister Historia a seventeen years old red head decides to spice up story time tonight. Instead of reading from the regular bedtime stories, she chooses to tell a story from an old fantasy novel. Historia tokes in her sister in place, as she stands up to dramatize the story with her red eyes wild open. Elizabeth packs her beautiful blond hair in a ponytail as she widens her red ruby eyes as well in suspense.

I tried to sleep but nothing worked, not even counting sheep. I drifted off into a short slumber, but something kept rubbing my face. It wouldn't stop hovering around me. I pried my eyes open and so a tree branch poked into my room from the window. That was weird and I didn't need anything creepy, it was already one in the morning. I sat up and looked at the tree branch at my window, how did it get in here?. I tried to lift it off my bed but before touching it, it moved to a standing position. I shifted to the edge of the bed in horror, covering myself with my favorite duvet.

Just as he approached a room’s doorway, he heard Tina and Kara’s conversation drifting from inside the room. “Tonight’s bedtime story is called ‘Tadpoles Searching for Their Mommy.’ The warm spring is here… A bunch of little tadpoles want to look for their mommy… After overcoming all the obstacles, the little tadpoles finally found their froggy mommy. Together, they lived happily ever after…” Tina’s tone was gentle as she read the bedtime story out loud from the storybook to her daughter. Kara lay in her arms, her heavy eyelids already glued together. She struggled to say, “The little tadpoles are very pitiful… I won’t be separated from you, Mommy… Even if we do get separated, I’ll find you
