She looked like she had fallen from heaven. Beautiful and stunning were words felt embarrassingly small to describe the Avery that I was currently looking at. How did she manage to get like this? The gown she wore seemed woven from light itself, pale gold and silver threads flowing around her body like liquid moonlight.

Yet Winona felt like it was a hundred times—no, a thousand times—colder than the depths of winter. From the moment she woke until now, Asher had not sent her a single message. The only two things he had said to her after walking through that door were lies. When she remained silent, Asher frowned in displeasure. "Come on, it's your birthday. Don't be angry with a child. We prepared a gift for you. See if you like it. I'll put it on you once you're discharged." As he finished speaking, he pulled out a gift box and opened it to reveal a diamond necklace inside. Anyone could tell they had randomly picked it up from a store on their way over.

The lanterns drifted higher, tiny flames trailing golden threads across the velvet sky. I lost sight of mine somewhere in the bloom of hundreds, but it didn’t matter. The moment was already carved into me like a scar I didn’t want to heal. Behind us, a hush settled over the garden, less reverent, more drowsy. The kind of hush that came after too much beauty, when the soul was too full to speak.

In the hush, fireflies rose among lilies, twinkling like tiny promises: light survives, even where grave markers once stood. Ophelia closed her fingers around the ring, feeling its cool curve against her pulse. *Little star, we made it past dawn. Now we learn how bright daylight can be.* ---
