The emergency brakes engage with a scream of tortured metal. Sparks shower around us like deadly fireworks. The elevator shudders violently, fighting a losing battle against gravity. The force throws us against the ceiling, then slams us back down. We’re still falling too fast. The brakes aren’t enough. Alex pulls me against him, one hand cradling my head protectively. I feel his lips brush my temple, a desperate benediction.

So I decide to better jump and die than to be rape by a creepy stalker.

JUPITER POV Keeping tabs on Grisha was as fun as it got. I still couldn’t believe that the little naïve girl with big-ass framed reading glasses was the golden phoenix who was going to bring us salvation and save the world from the hands of Anuka. It was Red's hand and he had been monitoring her from afar for a while. He was willing to prevent her from falling to the ground but the opposite was the case. Alex sniffled, the sorrow in his voice cutting through the air. "I know, honey. I know," Alex's mom murmured, her own voice thick with tears. My heart clenched at the sound of their pain. I wished I could ease their suffering, but I was powerless. "I don't know what I'm going to do without her," Alex whispered, his voice breaking. My tears mingled with his silent sobs as I listened to the anguish in his words. I wanted to scream, to defy the unfairness of it all, but all I could manage was a quiet, desperate hum of his pain. At that moment, the stark reality of my condition washed over me, and I knew I had to be strong for them, even if it meant facing the unknown alone.
