He three his phone on her lap. His hand roamed around the car as his eyes were carefully focused on the wall. They were not so wide and it was a town people did not visit often so crashing into something in that place was definitely not going to help. He opened a box he found besides him and searched if there was any Advil. To his dismay, it was full of things that felt like napkins. ‘Sh*t, it’s the tissue box.’ He thought to himself. “What’s the p-password?” She breathed out forcefully as she shifted in her seat.

“It’s nothing for you to worry about. Just some old notes. Private shit.” Private. Yeah right. The word only made my curiosity burn hotter, mixing with the ache in my cock that hadn’t gone down one bit. While he stood up to grab another bottle of whiskey from the bar cart across the room, I leaned forward quickly and clicked on the locked file. A password prompt popped up. Fuck. The head apothecary, an elderly wolf named Elian, was slumped over his desk. Standing over him was a young acolyte—a girl Audrey recognized as one of the new recruits from the refugee camps. The girl held a glass vial filled with a shimmering, violet liquid.

I spun around in the black desk chair watching as the white walls mixed with the blur of my Colton Dixon poster and the purple of my roommates tapestry. I stopped myself staring back down at the bright pink diary laying flat on the dark wood of the desk. My mother had gotten it for me as a going away gift to "reflect on my choices while away at college" but I don't think we have the same idea of what good and bad decisions are anymore. I opened the cover revealing the thin gray lines running down the first page and grabbed a pen from the cup on the left hand side of the desk.

Nothing more. Still, I caught myself thinking about the way he’d looked at me before he said “Truce.” Like he meant it. I shook the thought off as I unlocked the door to the apothecary. The bell above the door jingled softly. The shop still smelled like lavender and sage, and everything was where I had left it, the shelves lined with labeled jars, the bundles of herbs hanging upside down in the corner, and the sun filtering in through the dusty front windows.

My stomach twisted with equal parts fear and something darker—recognition, an impossible pull I hated. I couldn’t stop. Couldn’t turn. Not until I reached the apothecary. My hands shook as I rapped on the door, breath coming in uneven bursts. The smell of herbs, tinctures, and dried flowers greeted me like a promise. I needed work. I needed survival. I needed life for Carl.
