I walked into the dimly lit, graffiti-covered alleyway, my heartbeat syncing with the distant rumble of passing cars. The air was thick with the smell of rain and gasoline, filling my lungs with every shaky breath. Shadows stretched long and distorted as if they were playing tricks on me, mocking my presence. I pushed forward, needing this meeting with Dillon to go smoothly, desperate to seize any form of control.

Finally, I reached the top. “Do you have a flashlight?” I asked. “On your phone?” “Yeah.” Alec reached down and pulled out his phone from his pocket. Turning the light on, he handed it to me to see. At first glance, it was a basic attic. Lose installation was laying across the entire floor but so were many cardboard boxes. No eyes greeted me so that made me feel better. I did not want to come face to face with a bat. “I’m going in.” I told Alec.

Caelan looks around the busy street, his small brows furrowing as he fails to spot any washroom symbols on the stone buildings. Did I take the wrong turn? He turns on his heel to re-enter the guild hall, but before his small feet can cross the threshold, a massive, muscular figure clad in obsidian leather lunges out from the alleyway shadow behind him. A thick, narcotic-soaked leather cloth slams violently over Caelan's mouth and nose, cutting off his sharp cry of terror. A pair of scarred, iron-hard arms scoop his small, thrashing body into the air, yanking him into the darkness of the alley before anyone in the crowded street notices his disappearance.

At least he recognized the danger that was present. Camille didn’t answer him. She was too busy assessing the alley, her mind racing a mile a minute. The entrance was narrow and almost hidden between two buildings. It was also dark, barely illuminated by a streetlight at a distance. There were garbage bins against the walls, and the air smelled stale. Then she heard it again. A muffled yelp, followed by the sound of something — wait, no, someone — being slammed against a hard surface. There was movement in the darkness, further down the alley. Shadows shifted and there were too many muffled voices.

Staying silent felt like the best option. The motorcycle stopped in the eastern part of downtown, an area known for being “dangerous.” They passed through narrow streets and parked near an abandoned, dark warehouse. Belle followed Pooh, who walked fast with long strides. “Is it far?” Belle asked. “Almost there.” Pooh led her into a narrow alley with stairs descending underground. They passed through a small tunnel that smelled of urine and dampness. Ahead stood a rusted metal door, illuminated by a flickering, dim light.

Jax and I followed. The air in the alley felt closer. The walls were so close in places that we could have reached out and touched both sides at once. Scraps of torn posters clung to the bricks—advertisements for other matches, other worlds, and faces blurred until they were just smears of eyes and teeth. We’d made it ten steps before the first trap triggered. A line of red light, thin as a tripwire, shot across the alley a few feet ahead, chest‑high.

She’d find her way. Rain rushed to the end of the building and rounded the corner into an alleyway. It wasn’t particularly narrow, but it was a little dark. The fake moonlight and stars above her lit the entry and exit, but between where she stood and the light at the far end of the walkway, there was a large swath of nothing but darkness.

That was because I rarely needed more than a room or two. Yet Teeshay had used the expressions 'safe-house' and 'room'. Who could have told her that I had a place (or places) outside the Narimac? Lesheya? Unlikely. Pamna? No. Aliona ... Teeshay talked up a storm, and then asked if I minded going by Bookseller's alley. I had no objection. She took me there by way of Long Alley - a place you wouldn't want to be, after dark - and perhaps not even in bright daylight.

The next day, at sunset... A lonely and gloomy figure was walking in the long and narrow alley alone. There would be an intersection and crooked road every twenty meters. There were a lot of them, and all the roads were connected. This place was Alley Town, the most famous attraction in South City. The families and houses were located side by side and one after another. An alley could be found everywhere. Some alleys were connected together, while some were broken in the middle.

"I'll take you there." I trail behind him, my instincts screaming at me to turn back. Fatigue clouds my judgment, but I nod in agreement anyway. The streets grow quieter with each step, the hum of the city giving way to an unsettling silence. We turn into a narrow alleyway, the stench of garbage and metallic scent hit my nose. My skin crawls and my heart starts to palpitate. "Are you sure this is the right way?" I ask, trying to keep my voice firm despite the tremble.
