The lost packs
I can’t risk slowing down to catch my breath, so I veer left, toward the alleyways that crisscross this part of the underworld.
But the alleyways are a maze, and I know they’re closing in. I can hear their heavy footsteps thundering behind me, and a surge of panic tightens my chest. I spot a narrow opening between two buildings, barely wide enough for me to squeeze through, and without a second thought, I dart toward it.
I barely make it through, the rough brick scraping against my arms as I push forward. My heart pounds in my ears, drowning out everything else. The alley is dark and damp, the stench of trash overwhelming, but I can’t allow myself to falter. I have to keep moving.
