he asked me and I pointed to his shelves and he looked directly at me. "I want some books concerning some poisons, I want to know somethings about them" I said to him and he was a little bit confused, I would have loved to bring it along but I can get infected with it if I'm not careful enough. He could not question me so he just did as I have said, he brought all those books about poison and opened them all one after the other for me to take a look "I would love to take this books along if you don't mind" I said to him.

“Of course not.” He shrugged. “No big deal either way.” He took my hand, like he couldn’t lose that skin-to-skin connection for even a second, and led me back to the car, peering in the window. “You brought me a box full of books, Newt? I mean, I’d like to read a little more, but I’m not sure I’m gonna start with A Conceptual Approach to the Fundamental Principles of Biotechnology and Genomics. Is there any sci-fi under there anywhere?”

She walked towards where her daughter was and she stared at her for a while before moving her eyes to Hazel. “Thank you, Hazel,” she said it like she meant it and she moved her eyes back to fall on the book of prophecy before gripping it tightly. “Caitlin! No,” Hazel expressed shock when she suddenly realized and she quickly made to save the book but she was too late as the book turned to ashes as soon as the flames engulfed it.

I was so exhausted that simply staying on my feet felt like a battle of its own. The hidden shelf was locked, but the key I still carried from earlier slipped into the lock as though it belonged there. I hesitated for only a heartbeat before turning it. The key turned without resistance. I blinked. Apparently, the same key opened the restricted shelves as well. The books inside were different from the rest of the library. Their bindings were darker, their titles more unsettling. Volumes on forbidden healing, curses that corrupted the body, and rituals most healers would never dare speak of aloud.

Elias grabbed my hand tight. “This way,” he whispered urgently. “Don’t make a sound.” My heart raced as he pulled me deeper into the dark stacks. We moved fast but careful, stepping around carts and avoiding loose books on the floor. The flashlight beams from the power crew swept across the far end of the basement. Voices echoed. “Anyone down here? Maintenance check!” Elias led me behind a tall row of old reference books, the kind nobody touched anymore. We squeezed into a narrow gap between two heavy shelves. My back pressed against one. His body shielded me from the front. We were so close I could feel his chest rising and falling fast.

The study was dark, so I opened the blinds and took in the room. It was very... August. Brown. Black. More black. Not a single color brave enough to survive in here. There was a minibar. I wasn't surprised to find it stocked mostly with expensive whiskey. The bookshelf took up almost an entire wall. Business books. Finance books. Leadership books. Books about making money. Books about keeping money. Books about probably becoming even more unbearable than he already was. Not one novel. Not even a guilty pleasure romance. What a sad life.

he asked. I nodded with a smile, then took another sip. "Sharon made it." River cracked a grin. He then took his share, sipping quite a lot. "Not bad," he commented. I shook my head and walked over to the small shelf above the fireplace. My fingers sorted through the books until they settled on an orange-covered book with the words XXX XXX XXX written on it. I bring it back to the sofa, keeping River company as he returns to his tablet. A few minutes later, our cups were empty, and my heart was suddenly beating faster than it should. I put the book down on my lap, then looked up at River, who I could tell from the look on his face that he was also feeling strange in his body.

"That mark belongs to me." She stepped back, blade raised again. "You're lying." He took a slow step forward, his eyes glowing brighter. "I wish I were." Before she could react, the sky darkened. Dozens of crows rose from the trees at once, shrieking and circling above them. The air grew heavy, the ground trembling under her boots. Kael looked up at the sky. "The Bloodbound has awakened." Seraphina didn't understand what he meant-she only knew one thing.
