Again, she found herself drawn to the weird picture on the wall, and she took it down to get a closer look at it. When she immediately touched it, the walls behind it opened, displaying a small red cabinet. Out of curiosity, she opened the cabinet and found two golden bottles, which she immediately opened. Inside, the air smelled like old paper and cedar. It felt untouched and safe. She ran her fingers along the spines of books she couldn’t read — Japanese, Russian, Italian. Wars. Economies. Old bloodlines. She saw something sticking in between. A photograph tucked between volumes. She pulled it free. The image stole her breath. Two boys stood in front of a rusted iron gate. One was older, taller, his arm slung protectively around the smaller one. The younger boy’s hair was wild, his face smudged with dirt, but his eyes - her heart stuttered.

Each book on the shelf is wrapped in a thin, tan type of paper with the title and author written on the side. Bella reads the binding covers until she finds a book that stops her in her tracks.
