The reminder that even if the world was falling apart, we still had each other. So, yeah. Snacks. The vending machines on campus are overpriced scams, but I don’t care. I empty half my wallet and stuff a bag with everything I know she likes. Sour gummies. Chocolate bars. Those ridiculous spicy chips she pretends not to like but always eats first. And because I’m not a complete idiot, I throw in Lila’s favorites too. Can’t win back Ava without keeping her best friend on my side. By the time I’m done, my bag looks like I robbed a convenience store.

His grin is eager and contagious, and I hesitant for just a brief moment before I make my way over to him. I was anticipating working out with him, getting sweaty with him and maybe even practicing pinning him again, but the couch is cozy and inviting, and curling up next to him with a pillow and a fuzzy blanket is even more appealing than sparring with him. Bibah simply shakes her head at our childish shenanigans and takes a sip of her iced latte, metal straw clinking in the Hydro Flask. “The Awoo Book Club’s pick for this week is H.P Lovecraft.” She pats the voluminous book atop the pile and I notice it’s the library copy of H.P Lovecraft’s Omnibus 3. “I’m so excited to roast his ass.”

She then pushed the Cheetos towards Alice and said, “Want some?” “My favorite!” Alice took a few Cheetos and savored them with a bright smile on her. She then took out some Tupperware from her backpack and opened it up. “I’ve got some toast smeared with peanut butter and jelly; looks yummy, doesn’t it?” Scarlett took a look inside the Tupperware and found several bits of toast oozing delicious peanut butter and jelly. It made her mouth water. “Have a try!” Alice took one out and handed it to Scarlett.

Without Ruby, the packaged snacks would accompany her. Ruby usually made a variety of delicious snacks that had healthy sugar or fat content. I walked on the other side holding a small bottle of water, sunglasses on, trying to look like a woman who had voluntarily come to her ex-husband’s villa because of an emergency—not like someone whose life had just been dragged into a gothic novel with childcare. “What is this area?” Poppy asked, pointing at a smaller pergola. “A sitting area,” Sebastian said. “For meetings?” “It can be.” “For snacks?” “It can be that too.” Poppy looked at me. I shook my head. “You just had lunch.” “That was lunch. I’m asking about snacks. Legally, they’re different.” Sebastian pulled something out of his jacket pocket. I turned immediately. So did Poppy. He opened his palm. One small packet of crackers.

Julie said, setting the first one back on the seat and picking out the next. Julie's eyes lit up when she opened it, and her odd smile turned into a cute giggle. Low fat ice-cream, dark chocolate, coconut chips, apple slices, homemade cookies, a pack of marshmallows, chocolate-covered Pretzel, Scones, Energy drinks, Gourmet snack bar, Lemon candy, Organic milk, Strawberry Brownies, Organic Gummy bears and more. "Do you like them?" Steven asked, hoping that he did not go overboard with his purchase.

Cam claps his hands once, loud, like he’s starting a team-building exercise nobody asked for. “Alright, boys,” he says, voice way too cheerful for men who just tied a game we should’ve owned. “Who’s ready to emotionally recover? I’ve got snacks in my bag. Mystery snacks. Fun snacks. Possibly-illegal-in-three-states snacks.” A few guys snort. Aaron looks up from lacing his boots, trying—and failing—not to smile. Cam digs into his backpack like Mary Poppins on caffeine, pulling out a family-size bag of Skittles, a sleeve of Oreos, and something that looks suspiciously like dried mango but could also be plastic.

I teased, grabbing a pack anyway. “Oh yeah? What’s your elite choice, then?” he challenged. I scanned the shelf. “Raisinets,” I said, grabbing a box. “Raisinets!” Kol burst out laughing. “Are you secretly an eighty-year-old man?” “You know what? For that, the Twizzlers stay in my pocket.” I paid for the snacks and tucked them away. “No!” Kol tugged on my arm, grinning. “I’m sorry. I take it back.”

This seemed more corporate today than usual, but I began taking notes and wondering what legends and romance type of books we would read. Fourth period flew by and the bell rang. Book club was actually in this class too. How did I miss that before? It didn’t start for another fifteen minutes so I decided to leave my things and run to the restroom and grab a bag of chips out of the vending machine near the teacher’s lounge and be back with time to spare. I grabbed a bag of honey barbeque chips and heading back.
