CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE: Friday night was consumed with nightmares and at 4am I decided to give up trying to sleep. I leaned over to my nightstand and pulled out a book and a reading light. Might as well take this time to get something useful done rather than scroll away on I*******m again. It had been a bit but I was finally reading to finish the last book in this fantasy romance series I loved. I hadn’t wanted the story to end so I had put off reading the last book. I loved the romance between the two main characters, a bad-guy fae who turned out to be the good guy all along, and a human girl who finds herself thrown into a world of magic. While the library was filled with business books and self-help books, she was able to find some novels, albeit classics. Mary had stolen them, or more like borrowed them for a while, and she was in his room reading. And no, it wasn’t due to the fact that she missed Nicholas or just wanted to smell his scent. No. It was more because she found reading in his room better since it was bigger than hers and his bed was more comfortable. She lay on the bed, armed with a bowl of salted popcorn she had made early, as she flipped the pages of Harry Potter. Just close to her, on the nightstand, was the milkshake, which she would occasionally sip from.

The fire crackled gently in the corner of the living room, casting a soft amber glow across the shelves lined with leather-bound books. Outside, the sky had long since darkened, and the wind whispered through the cypress trees like a lullaby meant only for those still awake past bedtime.

Books makes everything better. With a sigh, I sat back, letting myself sink onto the large, plush sofa in my bedroom, a novel in my hand. The doors to my own terrace were open across the room, and with almost all the lights off, the room was bathed in a soft white glow from the moon. A summer breeze blew in, tickling over my bare legs and arms still pink from my bath and teasing up my nightgown. I bit my lip and shivered. What had I done earlier?

The air held a scent that was both musty and rich, a fragrance that spoke of countless hours spent poring over these texts, seeking enlightenment and mastery. The shelves themselves were made of a dark, polished wood that gleamed softly in the ambient light. The room was illuminated by the warm, golden light that emanated from ornate chandeliers hanging at regular intervals from the ceiling. The light cast a soft glow over the spines of the books, creating an inviting ambience that beckoned Danial to explore further.

Sunlight filtered through the sheer fabric, casting dancing patterns of light and shadow across the room. A cozy reading nook nestled in one corner, complete with an overstuffed armchair and a collection of leather-bound books. The inviting glow of a softly flickering lamp beckoned me to lose myself in the pages of a timeless classic, the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As I took in the beauty of my surroundings, I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

By the time she moved, the room was already dark. She carried the book with her out to the balcony at the back of the house, the one that overlooked the beach. The air was cooler now, salted, the kind of breeze that wrapped around your skin like comfort. A soft outdoor light flickered on automatically, bathing the space in a warm glow, providing her with just enough light to read. She curled into one of the chairs, bare feet tucked beneath her, and kept reading. Waves rose and fell in a steady rhythm, everything was so peaceful out here, she could stay here the whole day.

Winter is definitely approaching quickly. I thought it was going to be difficult to light the fireplace but the moment I held the lighter close to the wood it lit up. I sat down on the floor so that I could be close to the fire. I glanced at the clock, 6:15pm. I leaned over and grabbed the first book from the couch. The lightening thief. Maybe I could read one chapter and go and try to sleep. It was already 9 pm, and I was really tired, but the book was so interesting, demigods, minotaurs, camp half blood ...

The sun was gone, but it was still hot as sahara. I leaned in the bed and closed my eyes. As usual I couldn't sleep. I got up and took a book to read. It's one of my ways to feel at peace with my mind and body. Maybe this will help me get sleepy. The living room. It's majestic just like this book's theme. An impossible love story. Prince, princess. Breaking the rules for love. There is no better place to read this piece of art. I stepped out of my room and headed for the stairs, clutching the book to my chest. I lifted it to my face, inhaling its scent, old paper tinged with something almost... majestic.

But his eyes always flick to the satchel at my side, then away again. They think I’m grieving. Mourning. Fragile. They’re half right. At night, when the fires burn low and the camp quiets to snores and the occasional cough of the wounded, I open the tome. Not by lantern light—too risky, too bright. I wait until the last torch gutters out, until the only glow is the faint violet shimmer that clings to my own fingertips now, like foxfire on a grave. The pages drink that light and give it back brighter, clearer. The script seems to move when I stare too long, letters curling like smoke before settling into meaning.
