In his time as a True Crime writer, Byron had interviewed many people, many of them disturbed or troubled in some way. In these interviews, he would often run up against what he called The Breakdown, to the point where, due to the pressures of telling him their story a person would hit an unknown well of feelings and just… shut down, usually in a maelstrom of tears. They always recovered but it was at a point that Byron always hated, even dreaded.

Claire stated cheering me up. “A lot of people.” I replied crying. “I lost my baby. I was so stupid this is my fault. I should have stayed.” “It wasn’t your fault. It was that stupid truck drivers fault.” Claire replied. “No it wasn’t. I was being stupid. I bent down to reach my cell phone that fell in the car. I should have focused my attention on the road. It’s my fault. I killed my baby. I killed my baby.” I cried hysterically.

"You are an amazing person whether you see it or not. You see everything you've been through as bad luck but I see it as struggles that you made it through and became stronger from. I'm not scared of your past, Tiffany." Tiffany exhaled through her noes. She held a worrisome and somewhat sad look on her face which made my chest ache because I knew she was finding it hard to believe and accept that someone was willing to love her despite the baggage she was carrying. "Maybe you're right," she finally said, looking at me with soft eyes. "But... I'm broken and messed up and have pieces of me all over the place. That's not something anybody should have to deal with, Noah."
