As she did, the oversized silk sleeve of the robe slid down. It slipped past her wrist. Past her forearm. Bunching at her elbow. The morning sunlight hit her skin. And it hit the bruises. They were dark purple, almost black against her pale flesh. Four distinct, oval-shaped marks on the inside of her upper arm. And a matching thumbprint on the outside. Finger marks. The imprint of a hand that had grabbed her with enough force to crush capillaries. The grip of a man who had held her over a balcony.

McKay asks, reminding me of how I must look. My cheeks flame, and I touch them, scolding myself for my poor makeup job. My eye is dark purple with yellow edging now. And my other injuries are slowly healing. They don’t ache as much. Purple bruises. Yellow ones. I feel like a swatch for paint samples. But at least with my dress on, nothing is rubbing against them. “It was just something that happened at school.”

My bottom lip is burst, covered in flakes of dry blood. Hand imprints around my neck, I unbutton the dress shirt I have on to see the rest of my body. Apart from the few red marks on my stomach and around my thighs there's nothing severe. I turn around and look at my back in the mirror, a large bruise is on my lower back where one of the guys slammed against the counter and two bruises on both my shoulder blades. I frown at the memories of the events that happened, closing my eyes I hold back the tears that want to come out.

Unease prickles the corners of my mind and I ignore the fact that I’m definitely starting to panic. I look down at my thigh and see big blue spots on the inside of both of my thighs. When I washed, I didn’t search for every bruise, I just washed. Now that I look down at myself, my body is bruised in angry purple bruises. I try to close my legs together, but he doesn’t let me. “What happened?” He growled. His gray eyes flickered between his normal color and a glowing yellow. He raised his head and stared at me.

A soft whimper escaped me as I attempted to sit up. Pain shot through my body. I froze. Every muscle ached. My arms felt heavy. My legs felt weak. Even breathing hurt. Looking down, I noticed dark bruises scattered across my skin. My stomach dropped. Bruises. A lot of them. Some looked like fingerprints. Others stretched across my arms and legs in ugly patches of purple and blue. None of them should still be there. Werewolves healed quickly. A bruise might last minutes. A broken bone could heal within hours.

She took out a salve and a roll of soft cloth bandages. “I’ll start with your wrists,” she said gently. “I won’t touch anything you don’t allow.” Lycia extended one hand, biting down her pride. “Get it over with.” The salve stung at first. Then cooled. “Bruises are deep,” Nurse Celine murmured. “But nothing’s broken.” “Doesn’t feel that way.” “Pain lives beneath the skin too,” Nurse Celine said, glancing up. “It lingers longer than people think.”

"You Lin.. what's going on? What's causing those bruises and why are you protecting it." I wasn't protecting him.. I was protecting me and those I loved from him.. So her saying that just got to me. "Why do you care so much about my bruises?" "It's not that I care.. I just want to know.." Oh fuck that bruised my heart. So she didn't care... I took my book from her and put it in my bag, "it's nice to chit chat with you Ms Louw.. but I need to be out there now..." She just stared at me and I waved at her then got out.

My body felt like it had been through a storm — sore, heavy, like I'd been trampled by something wild. I opened my eyes, blinking at the quiet stillness of my room. Everything sat in its usual place. The books stacked neatly on the shelf, the drapes gently swaying with the breeze. Nothing looked touched. No signs of chaos. No blood. No broken walls. So then... Why did I feel like this? My gaze dropped to my arms. Long streaks of dark bruises marked my skin. Thin scratches ran along my shoulder. I sat there, staring at them in silence, trying to pull something, anything from my memory.

CHAPTER TWENTY ONE HAZEL Tears stung at the corner of my cheek as I watched Melissa's retreating figure. “Are you okay, my lady?” Britney asked as she examined my body. “I'm fine.” I said and smiled through the tears. “Her fingers left a print on your cheek, it's red. And your arms are covered in bruises, let me get a first aid kit real quick.” Britney said as she made to stand from the ground.

The bruises on my stomach were mostly old ones from sparring at the gym about a month ago they were turning a purple color now, but they were still visible and actually looked worse than they felt. Well I think she's seen enough! I pick up the duffle bag Riggin brought in and smile at Dr. Rose trying to ease her mind for Riggin's sake not hers. I actually could care less what she thought but I didn't like her thinking badly of him. “I'll have my doctor send over my records of the accident so you can take a look, but we are done here!” I said pulling out the jeans and black t-shirt Aunt Linda had packed for me. I quickly slipped out of the shorts I had on and pulled on the jeans hopping Dr. R
