My legs had a mind of their own at some point. We finally got to the room Lilac gave us, and I set Ella down to rest. I was nervous—way too nervous to walk out of the room. Too nervous to remember, I needed to breathe occasionally. The pressure buildup in my head caused me to feel dizzy. I fell on the bed as my legs gave in to the pressure. “What do I do now? Talk to me, Ella; you are emotionally stable like your mom. What do you think I should do when my heart feels like it wants to explode?”

It was strangely kind of… fluttery “Ugh, it can't be now,” I muttered, supporting my left hand with my stomach while the right hand rubbed over my belly. It kept twisting again and again. This very time, it came somewhat too hard. A heat spread through my lower abdomen, forcing me to straighten up immediately. What in heaven's name could that be? My fingers shook wildly as I placed them on the same spot again. Then, I heard a boom. That was a heartbeat. It was exactly like an echo, and the strange thing was that it was inside me.

My chest felt tight, like someone had placed a heavy weight on it, making it hard to breathe. My heart felt like it was tearing apart piece by piece.

What’s wrong with me? My body feels like it’s underwater, heavy and slow, every movement a delayed echo, rippling through me like I’d been hit by a massive wave. Applause ripples in the distance, but it sounds muffled and warped, like I’m hearing it through glass walls. My body feels like it’s lifting, and all I want to do is collapse. I blink. Once. Twice. The velvet curtain looms before me, and my chest rises and falls too quickly. I shouldn’t feel like this.

My heart was pounding so loud and there was a dull pain spreading across my chest. I instinctively looked down and saw a symbol right over my heart. I let out a hiss when I tried touching it. It was still faint but the I could feel it pulsing on my skin. Then without warning, the symbol burned hotter and pulsing deep inside me as if it had a will of its own.

Just like that. I sob once and bite my lip hard to stop more. Mom lifts her head and scans me fast. My face. My chest. My hands. “You warned us,” she says quietly. “I did not see it,” I whisper. “I just felt it coming.” “That is enough,” she says, and she presses her forehead to mine for one second. After that, nothing feels right. Even when everything looks normal, my chest keeps buzzing. Like static. People rush past. Voices shout. Feet pound the floor.

 Heat spread slowly across my breasts, deep and throbbing, like something inside me was waking up.  “What…” I whispered to the empty room.  I sat up slowly.  The pressure increased.  A strange, almost pulling sensation.  Instinctive.  Needy.  My heart began to beat faster.  I pressed a hand cautiously over my chest — and froze.  They felt fuller.  Heavier.  Swollen.  Panic flickered through me.  I threw the blankets aside and rushed toward the bathing chamber, my steps uneven.  Maybe I was imagining it.

I should call the Shaman, maybe he will know? My breathing’s shallow as my lungs burn with the effort to get oxygen, wringing my hands and running my fingers through my hair as I try to self-regulate the insane pounding of my heart. My blood pressure hiking and I start to feel woozy, nauseous, skin bristling with searing temperature as I lose control. I mean I feel like I’ve just found out I have cancer, or a deadly virus that’s incurable, or that Armageddon is on its way and we have nowhere to run.

My eyes widened and I bit my lips when he used his tongue to wet his dry lips. In the mall full of people, I couldn't see anyone except Ace's face and I couldn't hear anyone except Ace's breath and the little sound he made from his mouth while his eyes were still focused on the snow globe. For a moment, I heard my heart beat inside my chest, “It will look beautiful in your room,” I felt butterflies swam my tummy and my face felt hot when Ace murmured in a smooth, velvety voice. What was going on? What was this feeling? Did I just feel my heart skip? Why did my heart just flutter?

I felt my body collapse. Vital signs such as breathing, blinking, thinking, froze for what I assumed were a few milliseconds. My lungs released all the air stocked in them, and they only recovered after my oxygen supplies dropped to precarious levels. Immediately after, I felt my heart pumping blood again, slowly yet determinedly. I could feel it moving through my veins and arteries, leaving tickling traces all the way through, and making all its way up to my face until it reached my cheeks. Oh yeah. My cheeks, ladies and gentlemen, were giving themselves quite a feast up there.
