"Tell Leo I’ll visit this Saturday, okay? And tell him I’ll bring him something special." William’s dark eyebrows pulled together. He tilted his head, his sharp eyes narrowing as he studied the sudden, tender warmth radiating from his guarded secretary. He opened his mouth, a question forming on his lips— RING. RING. William’s phone vibrated violently against the table. He let out an annoyed sigh, glancing at the caller ID: MOTHER. He picked it up, rubbing his temples. "Mother, I’m in the middle of a business meeting—" "Don't you 'business meeting' me, William!" a regal, booming voice cut through the speaker so loudly Jane could hear it from across the table.

"I won't." I walk out after requesting lasagna with mashed potatoes and baked chicken for dinner. Making my way out onto the porch, my phone starts ringing, startling me in the process. The caller ID shows Dave calling, one of Malias' friends. "Taylor here," I answered, picking up. "Where are you, chicka?"

Liam’s little chest rose and fell under the blanket, and the thought of anyone coming for him again made my throat close. I leaned down, pressed a kiss to his temple. “Sleep tight, champ.” My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Unknown number. I stared at it, thumb hovering. I should let it ring out. But something twisted in my gut, and before I could talk myself out of it, I swiped. “Hello?” A low laugh crackled through the line. “Hey, Viv. Miss me?” William. My grip tightened until the case creaked. “What do you want?”

I'd texted him that evening saying, 'Hey, something urgent just came up. I'm sorry but I have to cancel.' That was about ten minutes after I'd texted, 'So excited about tonight! I've decided to cook for you so please don't eat anything. My address is: xxxx xxxx xxx' I'm a coward because I'd sent him a text message to cancel instead of calling him. I'd been ashamed because what was I going to say this time? I said I was going to make it up to him and now I was cancelling again.

Over a stupid misunderstanding? “W-William…” she weakly called. William turned to her with a sneer. "Do NOT! Call me by my name!" he snarled. "I never gave you permission to call me by name, and we are not even remotely close enough for you to address me as such! Or what? Did you think doing that would change anything? Were you hoping for some last ditch effort to make me feel anything for you? Looks like I was right about one thing. You're no real wolf."

My phone kept vibrating nonstop with notification sounds. Faith stood up and asked, "Messages from Rita?" I glanced at the contact name and nodded. The corners of her lips curved upward into a smile.

I felt nervous, I needed to get in there. Eric as if sensing my need pushed past me and slammed his fisted hand hard on the door. Still, nothing. “We need to get in there, something is not right.” Eric nodded his head in agreement, his lips pressed in a thin line. Eric moves back a little before ramming the side of his large frame into the door, the door bursts clear off its hinges clearing our way in. I follow Eric into the home, when Eric stops to take out his phone. He looked at the screen before looking up at me, ”It’s Kaleb, they might have found something.” I nodded and he went outside to take the call.

In a burst of excitement, Mike called our remaining buddies on a W******p group call. Thankfully, they were all online, and after the ringtone blared for a bit, they all joined. Mike: “Bros, wassup?” Alex: “We good, bro.” Dave: “We chillin’, man.” Pat: “Enjoying life over here.” Me: “When are y’all coming back to school?” Pat: “We here for now, but we’ll be back when tests start.”

I replied. "How are you? I'm surprised you called. Is everything alright?" "I called to address a pressing matter," I said. "What's going on?" William's tone turned serious. "Are you available? Where are you currently?" As a renowned expert, William frequently traveled across states for meetings, events, and conferences, sharing his expertise on various platforms. "I'm currently at an airport in California," he replied. "California?" I repeated, struck by the coincidence. "Could you do me a favor? It's urgent."

It’s William. “William,” I said, looking at the text. I see those three dots that show he's typing. William: William, as in the one you met at the grocery store, the childhood friend you thought was dead. For the fun of it, I reply: doesn't ring a bell. Are you sure you're not an impersonator? William: I would have impersonated some governor or president rather than boring old William. Me: you're not boring. William: oh I am. You should hear how I have fun on the weekends.
